The Bishop of Exeter (@bishop_mikeharrison), who was one of 46 people to take the plunge for charity, added: “The Cathedral is an iconic building right in the centre of Devon. It’s a sign of the Christian faith, but it’s also a centre of hospitality for so many different groups. In 1665 local organ builder John Loosemore created what has become one of the most distinctive and striking organ cases ever built. In over three hundred years the organ has been expanded and updated to meet the ever changing musical demands of a living Cathedral, from the expansion and raising of Loosemore’s case and the moving of the impressive 32’ pipes to the South Transept, to the creation of an entirely new section of the organ in the Minstrels’ Gallery. The quire in Exeter Cathedral is a focal point of its architectural and religious significance. This Gothic masterpiece inspired poems by William Wordsworth and Alfred Lord Tennyson and paintings by JMW Turner. The Abbey was founded in 1131 by Cistercian monks, starting as a timber building. It later evolved into a stone church and cloisters, before the patronage of wealthy Marcher Lords allowed the monks to build a new Abbey church in 1269. Have you visited a living Catholic monastery in Britain? I was lucky enough to recently visit Ampleforth Abbey. It is a beautiful secluded living monastery in the rolling hills of North Yorkshire. These days the abbey is a community of 39 monks, which operates under the Rule of St Benedict. There are currently 19 cathedrals in England listed as Roman Catholic. We have visited 8 so we are almost half way through but so far this one is our favourite! A close second is St John the Baptist in Norwich which was actually funded by the same man, Henry Fitzalan-Howard 15th Duke Norfolk. If you don’t include any of the Anglican cathedrals that were built pre-1530s (any built before the reformation, will have originally been a Catholic site) then you will only find modern Catholic cathedrals. There were a couple of centuries when catholics could not openly practice their faith or open their own places of worship. A lot of the Catholic cathedrals we see today are therefore mid-20th century which have their own unique style or old parish churches that were later given cathedral status. “Towers Of Gold” • Visiting the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims during yesterday’s intense golden hour lighting 🌇📸 The cathedral was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was the traditional location for the coronation of the kings of France. The cathedral is considered to be one of the most important works of Gothic architecture. A major tourist destination, it receives about a million visitors annually. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. • 🎥 I realized I forgot to turn off the volume in the videos while editing this Instagram Reel, but it shows just how quiet Reims cab be.
