I had followed reports of unusually low fishing activity in the area. A pod of whales being tracked in the Atlantic had mysteriously vanished. These events were unexplained, but I knew. I knew they had become food for that monster. She was hard to see at first. She had scales and skin and hair that seemed to blur into the sunset. Her stomach, engorged with her massive haul, hung over the side of her perch and wobbled in the surf with a terrifying girth. As she rested on the rock, she released unearthly, grotesque belches, like the great horn of a lighthouse. It was obvious that she was overstuffed for the journey ahead, but I perceived that she was still hungry. I can't stop thinking about her. Before she disappeared, I could have sworn she saw me. Did she know me? She looked with questioning instincts, as though I was the first to see her in centuries, before she dropped like a great mass of stone calving off a mountain back into the sea with a heavy splash. Her endless stomach bobbed up from the water as her tail splashed down and pulled her enormous bulk under. It felt like hours of wonderment and fear. In reality, I caught only a glimpse.
