I have said it before and I’ll say it again— wet felting is magical! It is amazing to me that thousands of individual fibers— hairs off of a living animal— can be arranged and mashed together and will eventually become a single piece. Like, how does it work?! This flower hat is adorable! I love the color and the little curly stem. I love the petal edge. I can’t wait to see it on a real baby. :) Have you tried wet felting? Wet felting is one of the oldest techniques for creating fabric from wool fibers. All that’s needed is warm water, soap, and a lot of manual labor to agitate the fibers and encourage them to bind together into one large knotted shape. A simple but incredibly versatile art. But don’t mistake simplicity for ease. We are diving into the world of felted wool and hope to create many designs from it soon, alongside our handwoven loomed fabrics. The Magpie Wings The winged collar takes a lot of planning and measuring before the workout - which is wet felting begins. The dry wool is laid down in the chosen colour ways, rubbed with soap and water then rolled in between layers of bubble wrap, tangling up to create homemade felt. Needle felting feels magical. I love how something starts so fluffy and with a little bit of magic it transforms into any shape you can think of! I know it’s now actually magic. But it feels like it to be able to bring something to life like this! Needle felting uses notched needles to agitate the wool fibers, causing to tangle and bind together to create a firm piece of fabric. I’ve been dreaming up a serious of pieces using these bell shapes to create diagonal movement exploding out of the frame. If you can see the vision, trust the process. ✨️STARRY NIGHT✨️ Here's a little share of my latest felt making process for creating a new collection of bookmarks, inspired by my favourite Van Gogh, Starry Night. You can see me placing the fibres for the wet felting process, needle felting the detail before repeating the wet felting a second time. Then I free machine embroidered the foreground, stiffened and backed the felt, chopped it into strips and edged each piece with zigzag stitch. Most people don’t realise this… but the biggest difference between flat, beginner-looking projects and realistic, lifelike needle felting is ‘how you build your layers. ❌Not the needle you use. ❌Not how fast you poke. ❌Not having twenty shades of wool. ✅It’s the ‘layers’. ✅The subtle shifts in colour. ✅The tiny tufts added in the right places. ✅The patience to build depth instead of rushing for the final shape. Once you understand how layering and blending actually work, everything changes — your animals gain softness, your birds get dimension, and suddenly things start to look alive instead of fuzzy.
