One of the main questions I get at plant talks, walks, and classes is what field guide I recommend most. The answer is absolutely @Samuel Thayer’s field guide to edible wild plants! I’ve had so many field guides over the years, and after I got this one, it’s pretty much the only one I reach for. It’s so comprehensive and thorough! Thanks Sam for this incredible resource! #edibleplants #fieldguide #foraging101 #foragersoftiktok #wildplants

15 side quests you can start TODAY to build conservation experience wherever you are (part 1/5)🌿: [Don’t forget to save for later!] 1. Join a citizen science project through @inaturalistorg: @inaturalistorg is a platform that allows anyone to contribute to citizen science projects around the world. For example, there is an ongoing City Nature Challenge from 24-27 April, where you can submit observations to the largest community science biodiversity global census in the world! 2. Identify wildlife footage on @wildlifeinsights: @wildlifeinsights is a platform for uploading and analyzing camera trap footage, with the option of inviting the public to contribute to identify wildlife species captured. As a volunteer, you can help tag images and learn about different species along the way. 3. Email a professor & shadow their research: On Google Scholar (or any research database), search up a conservation topic (e.g. “farming in Hong Kong”) that interests you. Challenge yourself to reach out to the professor(s) involved asking if you can shadow a day of fieldwork or offer to help with science communication! More often than not, you’ll be surprised by their response. What are some other ideas for side quests to contribute to conservation in your community?👇🏽 Follow for part 2 :)

The field work part of research is really only the data collection phase. Everything else - coming up with a research question, reading, getting funding, making plans, analyzing data, and science communication - generally all happens indoors at a computer. 📚📝💻 I actually don’t mind this at all - if every day all year was field data collection, I’d be so tired and really struggle to find a routine. The planning, analysis, and communication are also so important for the research to have impact, which to me is the entire point of doing it 🌊🌳✨ #gradschool #phdstudent #conservationbiology #womeninstem #outdoorsy #wildlifebiology
