Saw this and had to share. This is how some of my first interactions with clients look like, and it's completely fine. we will unravel everything together. Many clients say, " I don't know where to start." My response is to start from anywhere. A lot of them fear being judged or a burden to me. However, I reassure them that every part of their story is valid and welcome, and I want to hear it all. As both a human and a therapist, I have seen and experienced similar challenges, so judging them would never cross my mind. My goal is to support, and my satisfaction comes from seeing them succeed. credit: tiktok/ Oliviacadee #mham2024💚 #mentalhealthbelize #mham2024 #therapysession #healjourney #firsttherapysession #psychologicalhealth #Psychology #belize #insighttherapy

What Actually Happens In Your First Therapy Session? #therapysession #therapysessions #therapist #therapistsofinstagram #therapists #therapistsofig #therapyworks

The first session (aka the intake session) is the starting point in therapy where your therapist gets to know you, your experiences, and what you’re hoping for, so we can begin building the foundation for our work together. It can feel overwhelming or awkward to open up in the first session, but I will always meet you exactly where you are at and cheer you on along the way👏🏼🤍 --- #therapy #fyp #mentalhealth #therapist

Okay, so the sessions aren’t alwaysss like this. But I know from when I was the client in therapy that a lot of mine went like this! And I of course do see it often as the therapist. There is no judgement with this! Sometimes we need to warm up before nearly an hour of exerting a lot of mental and emotional energy. Other times we really are genuinely focused on the immediate surfaced things, and one question from the therapist can unlock what’s beneath the surface. Whatever your process, a) know that this trajectory is normal and b) it’s okay to not be fine. We’re here for it all 💕 To learn more about my services, click on the link in my bio to schedule a free consultation! POV: You’re getting ready (physically and mentally) for your first therapy session ✨ Opening up to a therapist—who’s practically a stranger—can feel intimidating. Thoughts might race through your mind, like: “Where do I even start? What if this doesn’t actually help me? Am I scared to change?” But remember, you’ve done hard things before. You've faced the unknown and grown from it. Trust yourself and this journey—one step at a time.

i’m grateful to be here for both the positive moments and the crashouts—and everything in between 🫡 #therapistintraining #psyd #psydstudent #gradstudent #therapy ✨Disclaimer: This content is intended for educational, supportive, and entertainment purposes only and should not be considered therapy or a substitute for professional mental health care. 🧠 I am a psychology intern and therapist in training, working under the supervision of a licensed clinical psychologist. 📝 If you are a current or former client, please note that engaging with or commenting on this content could compromise your confidentiality.

❤️ Who can relate? You can talk for hours to friends but the idea of going to therapy fills you with fear. If that is you, here are a few tips from me, a Clinical Psychologist who has supported countless people through that first therapy session: • The majority of people walk into their first session feeling nervous and unsure how to articulate everything they want to say. The majority of people then walk out feeling calmer and more hopeful and inspired for their therapy journey. • The therapy room often becomes your sanctuary. The one place you can go to and express yourself unapologetically, knowing you will not be judged. • It’s normal to worry that your story may shock the therapist. But it’s almost impossible to shock a therapist. • You cannot cover everything in the first session. Your therapist does not need you to explain everything in a specific order or with absolute clarity. They will take notes if they might need to come back to something later. • If you feel nervous or fear judgement, say it. Tell the therapist how you feel and they will help you to understand and work through it. That is what they are there for. • Take all your fears with you and see if therapy could help you change your life. I’m rooting for you! 😃 👉More on this in my No.1 Sunday Times Bestselling book, Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? (Currently -50% off @ £7.50 inc delivery see link in bio). Today I have my first therapy session. I’m nervous. I’m scared. I don’t know what to expect. I do this thing where I refuse to ask for help and support. I rarely go to my family or friends because I’m embarrassed to be weak or look like I’m struggling. I hated crying, and for years I would convince myself that it’s a sign of weakness. After years of trying to convince myself that therapy could be an option, it took me almost 10 months to book an appointment. Don’t you ever be ashamed of asking for help. You are putting your mental health first, and that’s the most important thing.

I work with many young adults, and often, one of their first questions is, “How long will therapy last? ✨One thing I know is that clients get used to coming in and telling me about their struggles, and some of my young adult clients are afraid to let me know when they’re feeling better. This feeling is so normal because therapy has become a safe space for them by the time they start to feel it. 🫶🏻The thing is, I want my clients to know (from the very beginning) my goal is NOT to make them dependent on me. ☺️I often tell my clients, “Therapy isn’t over when your life is perfect. You might know that you’re ready for therapy to be done or to take a pause when you can tell yourself, ‘I know my life isn’t perfect, but I have the tools to deal with the storms.” 👍🏻 Please recognize that every therapist works with different populations and we have different approaches. I will often adapt this, depending on the needs and presenting diagnosis of the client. 😀I’m super curious to know if you use a similar or different approach with your clients!
