This is one of our favorite 5-minute homeschool science activities and it teaches kids about density in a super visual way. Kids love watching the egg magically rise to the top! Supplies • 2 clear glasses • Water • Salt • 2 eggs • Spoon ✨ I linked all the supplies we used in my Amazon storefront under Homeschool Science Experiments. ⸻ Instructions 1️⃣ Fill both glasses with water. 2️⃣ Add 4–6 tablespoons of salt to one glass and stir well. 3️⃣ Leave the other glass with plain water. 4️⃣ Carefully place one egg in each glass. 👀 Watch what happens! The egg sinks in regular water but floats in salt water. Science Lesson Salt changes the density of the water, making it easier for the egg to float. This is the same reason people float easily in the Dead Sea! This happens because as eggs age, the small air pockets inside it grow larger as water is released and replaced by air. Egg Float Test 🥚 If you’re like me you keep your farm fresh eggs on your counter before putting in the fridge or eating them. Sometimes I forget exactly how they are so I run the float test! It’s quite easy and has ALWAYS been accurate for me. You can also do this with store bought eggs or other birds eggs (ducks, quail etc). All you have to do is remember two things: 1️⃣ If it rapidly sinks to the bottom it’s still fresh-keep it! 2️⃣ If it floats, it’s filled with air and can no longer be consume- discard it! I sometimes get eggs that tilt upwards (starting to fill with air) so I either hard boil those or feed them back to my chickens. Those just need to be consumed soon since they are starting to go bad.
