This year I planted my first cut flower bed in our garden. 🌺 We had leftover wood, it was a last minute decision and I just ran to the nursery and grabbed some flowers I thought would be bright, attract bees and fill an empty space in our garden area. I’m not an expert. This is brand new for me. Going into next season, here are a few things I will think about more before planting: 1. I will pick flowers/colors that I want to have cut and in vases in my home all summer. I knew I wanted zinnias (and I’ll DEFINITELY plant them again next year), but I had NO idea how many amazing colors existed, nor did I plan what would look well together in a vase. I just grabbed whatever the nursery had and planted. They really brightened up my garden space, but I definitely didn’t love how they looked together in a vase inside. 2. I’ll plant at least one filler plant that adds dimension to flower arrangements. I did have snapdragons, but…. they were always covered in tiny bugs and I could never bring them inside! I’ll take more time to pick out a filter flower that matches my cut flowers. 3. I’ll ask friends that have amazing flowers if I can trade seeds. Just a couple weeks ago, I traded cucumbers for green beans and zinnia seeds that I’ll plant next year! I had been admiring her pictures of her garden flowers on IG all summer and it just worked out! Yes, you can just go buy the fancy flower seeds that you’ve been obsessing over (and save your seeds every year) but sometimes your neighbor down the road might have exactly what you want!
