Hormones can significantly impact your fat loss journey… It’s not just as simple as “eat less, move more” for women like it is for men, we are impacted in more ways than one when it comes to our cycles. Endometriosis, PCOS, menopause… body fluctuations !! Body fluctuations are a natural part of being a woman but they’re not spoken about enough.. We need to look at changes of weight OVER TIME! Use the scales as a metric and don’t get attached to the number. We need to learn to work with our hormones rather than against them. It takes time but it’s about listening to your body and adjust your training, movement and nutrition based on how you feel. Men have a 24 hour cycle. Women have a 28 day cycle !! Listening to your body can help support your fat loss goals but also can help build a healthier, stronger relationship with your body & your mental health. During the follicular phase, estrogen levels gradually rise, which can make it easier to stick to your fitness routine and manage your appetite. Compared to the luteal phase where many women experience PMS symptoms like bloating, cravings, and fatigue. Progesterone can also slow down digestion, leading to feelings of heaviness or bloating, constipation and an increase appetite !! Soooooo During this phase, I would consider gentler activities like yoga, walking, or stretching. Instead of depriving yourself, try to incorporate foods you crave (dark chocolate) whilst focusing on nutrient-dense foods that keep you satisfied and energised. If you need to slightly increase your calorie intake for this time, do that. We burn 100-150 calories more per day when we’re due on our periods. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, stick on a baggy top and don’t let the scales bother you. You’re weighing heavier because you’re holding onto more water! It’ll come back down. Consider aligning your workouts and nutrition with your menstrual cycle, a practice known as cycle syncing! It’s easy to be discouraged by the number on the scale. It can feel like you’re doing everything right, but the number just isn’t moving (or it’s moving in the wrong direction). Or, if you have a night of enjoying yourself like I did and you see the scale spike the next day, it can feel like you just wiped away weeks of progress. And that’s tough to deal with. I get it. But here’s some math for you: Even if you overate your maintenance calories by 2000 (which would be a lot), you’d only gain about half a pound of body fat. Anything else is just food and/or water in your system. One step further: Let’s say you were in a 500 calorie deficit every day. That would equate to 3500 calories a week which is roughly 1 lb of bodyweight. In a perfect world where none of the things above affected your bodyweight & you were in your 500 calorie deficit every day (which also doesn’t happen perfectly because you don’t burn the exact same amount of calories every day and there’s such a thing as having a life), you would lose 0.143 pounds per day (500/3500). Here’s the kicker, you can lose your 0.143 pounds of fat and still gain weight on the scale because of any of those other things. Weight fluctuations will happen. But the idea that I gained 3 lbs of fat YESTERDAY, is silly. Do you know how much food I would have had to eat? One day of information on the scale does not reflect the progress you are or are not making. (Honestly, it’s a better metric of how badly you need to pee than how much body fat you have.) This is why the scale shouldn’t be your only tool to track your progress. Measurements, photos, & how clothes fit are all better metrics. The scale can lie. Pants don’t lie. Please save this post as a reminder for when you’re discouraged by the scale. P.s.
