Right after this happened I asked him if he wanted a pup cup and he said yes, asked him if he wanted something else and he said no, and asked him again if he wanted pup cup and he said yes. Sometimes I forget how cool it is that my dog can say something, I ask a question back, and she adds more detail. That simple back-and-forth is our most common pattern of interaction with buttons: she initiates, I ask a follow up question, she expands. I love these exchanges because you can really see cognitive skills in action. Stella has to understand my question to be able to provide an appropriate response. If you want to help your dog engage in short conversations like this, try repeating what they say and adding one more word. Ask a simple follow-up question. It’s okay if they don’t respond right away. Pause. Then model one or two possible responses and choose one to act on. Every time you do this, you’re showing your dog how conversations continue and what happens after they use words. When I find particularly interesting about this is that she has the word sick. I would use sick to describe coughing up a hairball. But apparently for her it was ouch. And yes, I see the grass in there. She just likes the flavor of grass and will eat it anytime it's offered to her, although in this case it clearly helped with the hairball situation. She has also said OUCH before coughing up a hairball, so I feel like she really has a consistent view of this. The abstract grammatical concept that I really wish we could do would be prepositions. Because "ouch is on fabric" would have been so much clearer. And we are working on those... slowly. FAQ Where do I get a mat like this?
