One of my favourite changes in Willow since switching to Fear Free/Force Free training is seeing her personality shine through. She’s loud when she’s excited, she’s pushy for attention and she’s goofy when we’re playing and I LOVE it, because it means she’s no longer scared to communicate. Instead of correcting a “bad” behaviour, I’m focusing on laughing with her and setting her up for success, and remembering that she’s allowed to take up space in her happiness as well as in her uncertainty. Tool users preach about how they allow for “clear communication” but when you suppress behaviour, the communication becomes one way, which turns guidance into force. It’s no longer a partnership but a dictatorship, and that’s not the relationship I want with anyone, let alone my best friend. I love seeing Willow’s personality come out more and more each day. We aim to have our birds out of their cages for as much time as possible but often feel conflicted when it comes to getting things done that aren’t safe for the birds to be a part in. Birds by nature are curious and want to be involved, it’s not a default response for them to want you to walk away without them. As a result we end up stuck and frustrated with a situation we don’t want to cage them for Stationing is an easy way to get the best of both worlds in these cases! The bird is taught to keep their feet on a designated perch, play stand, or area and is reinforced for keeping those feet planted while we gradually add distance between ourselves and the bird. Over time building up to longer durations, larger distances, going out of sight, and adding distractions. The end result is us being able to cue the bird to their station, go and do our quick chore, and return back to a bird still safely in their zone. I often see posts about force free training being about no boundaries, no rules, or letting your dog do whatever they want, and that is so misleading and misunderstood. Force free training is rooted in effective methods that help your dog learn and thrive without the use of force or fear. We use rewards to encourage the behaviors we want to see more of, rather than punishing unwanted behaviors. Because what gets reinforced gets repeated! We recognize that dogs are not just animals to be controlled, but sentient beings with their own thoughts, emotions, and needs. This allows us to tailor our training to suit their temperament and learning style, rather than applying a one size fits all approach. We prioritize building a partnership based on trust because everyone learns better from a teacher they trust. So let’s stop bashing force free training.
