However, merely five meters beyond the roadside, the land is reportedly bald and cleared due to extensive land-clearing activities. Residents have dubbed this phenomenon a ‘fake forest’ that masks the reality of deforestation. This practice is criticized for misleading the public and passersby into believing that the forest cover is still healthy. The large-scale deforestation, driven by land clearing for plantations, the timber industry, and development projects, is leading to serious impacts, including rising air temperatures, wildlife encroachment, and increased risks of floods and extreme weather. Sumatra is breathtaking. Dense jungle, rare wildlife, endless shades of green… and then, suddenly, the landscape changes. Miles and miles of palm oil plantations stretching to the horizon. Perfectly lined. Perfectly uniform. Impossible to ignore. Palm oil is deeply woven into Indonesia’s economy. The country is the world’s largest producer, and the industry supports millions of livelihoods from smallholder farmers to large-scale employment and exports that contribute significantly to national income. But oil palm isn’t native to Sumatra. Since the 1990s, Indonesia has lost TENS OF MILLIONS of hectares of forest, with palm oil development recognised as one of the major drivers of deforestation in Sumatra. Travel shows you beauty, but it also shows us complexity and the disappointing reality of how the human race is evolving. Livelihoods, environmental cost, greed, survival, lack of education, power plays, progress and consequence. Multiple truths existing at the same time.
