Freediver SECRET for longer breath holds🫁 There is a superpower that freedivers know how to activate that helps us easily hold our breath for longer 👀 This superpower is our Mammalian Dive Reflex (MDR) - here’s how to activate it ⤵️ 👀 Facial Immersion (especially in cold water) - When water touches our face, especially the nerves around our eyes, this triggers our MDR. ✅ Before your diving session, take a few minutes to completely submerge your face in the water (without your mask on!) 🫁 Breath Holding (increase in CO2) ✅ Give yourself a few warmup dives every freedive session to begin to activate your MDR. Doing slow, relaxed, warm up dives with hangs is a great way to activate our MDR! 🤿 Increased Pressure ✅ Warm up dives and hangs are a great way to access this MDR trigger. For more advanced freedivers, I recommend FRC dives! Train your MDR and watch your freedives transform ~ with a trained MDR we will have longer, deeper, more relaxed, and effortless dives. What happens when our MDR is activated: 🫀 heart rate slows down to conserve oxygen 🩸 blood flows to central cavity to preserve oxygen where it is needed most 🫁 blood shifts to our lungs to protect them from compression on deep dives Remember to never dive alone, always with a trained buddy! Can you hold your breath with me while I dive 100m without fins? 🧜🏼‍♀️ Since you guys liked the last video breath hold challenge in the cenotes, I thought I’d make a dynamic freediving version, and take you through the process. 😊 Diving without fins is one of the most challenging freediving disciplines as the goal is to reach the longest possible distance on one breath without the help of any equipment, relying on the efficiency of each movement. TOP 5 MISTAKES ⤵️ Save for later 💾 1️⃣ KEEPING YOUR SNORKEL IN Diving with your snorkel in your mouth is a common beginner mistake. It delays your recovery breath at the surface and isn’t best practice for safety 🤿 2️⃣ NOT EQUALISING ON THE SURFACE Many beginners skip this step. Equalising before you descend prepares your ears for the pressure changes as you go deeper 👂 3️⃣ NOT EQUALISING ENOUGH DESCENDING Waiting until you feel pressure is too late. A good rule of thumb is to equalise every metre on the way down. ‼️ If you feel any pain in your ears, stop your descent immediately. 4️⃣ SKIPPING A PROPER DUCK DIVE A weak or rushed duck dive wastes energy. Extend your arms down, hinge at the hips to a 90° angle, then let your legs follow so your body forms a straight line 🦆 5️⃣ RUSHING AND TENSION Freediving is about patience and control.
