An FBA isn’t about “labeling” a child; it’s a problem-solving process used to understand the why behind challenging behaviors. When we identify the “function” of a behavior, we can stop guessing and start supporting. What does an FBA look at? Antecedents: What happens right before the behavior? Behavior: What exactly is the student doing? Consequences: What happens immediately after? (This often reveals what the student is gaining or avoiding). Why it matters: Once the team understands the function—whether it’s seeking attention, escaping a task, or a sensory need—a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) can be created to teach the student more effective ways to get their needs met. If behavior is impacting your student’s education, you have the right to request an FBA. 💡 #FBA #FunctionalBehaviorAssessment #SpecialEducation #IEP#Kaizeneducationalgroup

Join us for today’s discussion about Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) - when they are necessary, how they should be handled and implemented and some helpful tips to keep in mind! #BIP #FBA #behaviorassessment #specialeducation

Behavior is communication. When a student’s behavior starts interfering with learning or leads to suspensions or removals the question shouldn’t just be “How do we stop this?” It should be: Why is this happening? A Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) looks at patterns, data, observations, and input from staff and parents to understand the function behind the behavior. And in certain disciplinary situations under IDEA, schools are required to conduct one. If behavior is becoming the focus instead of your child’s progress, it may be time to ask about an FBA in writing. Understanding the “why” changes everything. When I get a new cohort of Pivot into IEP Advocacy®️students, I hear how many of them were already doing many parts of advocacy already. They were the go-to person to look at IEPs. Parents of past clients reached about IEP questions. They were brainstorming collaboration ideas to help schools understand the kid a little more. Other BCBAs would ask advice about what they knew about special education. So if you’re this person and you’re curious about adding IEP advocacy as a service, send me a DM. #bcba #boardcertifiedbehavioranalyst #bcbamom

Support shouldn’t mean separation. The Least Restrictive Environment ensures children learn alongside peers whenever possible, with the right supports in place to meet their unique needs. #AppliedBehaviorAnalysis #BoundlessABA #ABAForParents #InclusionMatters #SpecialEducation #PositiveABA #AccessToEducation

A BIP isn’t just a behavior plan — it’s supposed to connect patterns, triggers, and supports into something that actually changes outcomes. #SpecialEducationBoss #BehaviorInterventionPlan #BIP #IEPProcess #BehaviorSupport #SpecialEducationMatters#TheEpicIEP Get The Epic IEP on Amazon and start your journey today!

I know how much heart you put into making sure your child has the right support in place. If the school has mentioned a "#BIP," I’ve got your back with a simple explanation of what that document actually does for your child. We’re talking about a written plan that outlines specific #interventions for staff to use to help replace or reinforce certain behaviors. I’m here for you to make sure you feel confident knowing how data is being collected and used to help your child succeed. 📋💪🙌 Has your child’s school ever suggested a formal behavior intervention plan? #SupportiveCommunity #SpecialNeedsParents #BehaviorIntervention

In ABA, it’s easy to focus on programs, data sheets, and goals… But none of that works without one thing first: Trust. Kids don’t learn from people they’re afraid of. They learn from people they feel safe with. 🤍 Before the trials. Before the demands. Before the expectations. We build connection. Because rapport isn’t only a “first week” strategy, it’s something we build every single day. #ABAtherapy #AppliedBehaviorAnalysis #BCBAlife #RBTlife #autismsupport

Soooo, what are BIPs & why do they seem to fail?🤷♀️😬 Let's talk about it. ⬇️ A Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) in special education is a strategy designed to help a student improve problem behaviors that are hindering their learning. It involves identifying specific behaviors, understanding their roots (functions), and outlining steps to replace negative behaviors with positive ones to meet the same function the student was initially seeking. A BIP typically includes proactive strategies, teaching of alternative skills, and details consistent responses to behaviors. HOWEVER, BIPs are NOT the end all be all & don't actually always work. Why? Because of: ✅️Inaccurate Initial Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA): If the underlying reasons for the behavior are not correctly identified, the plan may be addressing the wrong issues. ✅️Inconsistent Implementation: The plan must be applied consistently by all staff members with fidelity. Inconsistencies can undermine its effectiveness (which is why ALL staff members should be well versed on all things FBA/BSP/BIP!) ✅️Lack of Buy-in: If the student or staff do not believe in the plan or are not committed to it, it may fail. Oftentimes, BIP is thrown at a teacher without their input AT ALL & they have to shift many things around in order to even implement it & the frustration only grows. Also, often time reinforcements are "sticky charts" & serve as no real motivator for the kid🫠 ✅️External Factors: External influences such as issues at home, trauma, peer relationships, or changes in the student's environment can impact the success of a BIP. Now you tell me - what's been your experience with the success of BIPs? 👇 Comment "SYSTEM" to stop expecting the bare minimum & lets get you legally compliant & effective solutions👇
