Welcome to Bantar Gebang, one of the world’s largest landfills outside Jakarta, Indonesia, AKA Trash Mountain. — Thousands of trucks dump waste at the bottom of the pile, and excavators pass the garbage to the top, roughly fifteen stories. — Up to 20,000 people live and work near the landfill, searching for plastic, metal, electronics, and other materials potentially worth something. — Most make between $2-10 per day… — Contrary to popular talking points, the fastest way to reduce global emissions is by elevating hundreds of millions of people, like those at Bantar Gebang, out of poverty. — When survival is the only focus, there’s no regard for the environment. Only until humans find consistent nourishment, heat, and shelter can they consider long-term implications. — The most efficient way to elevate humans? More natural resources and infrastructure.
