If you’re planning for new raised beds this year SAVE this post 🙌 LINK TO THIS RAISED BED IN BIO ⬆️ 5% off discount code: ROOTEDHEART The bed in the video: Tall 8-in-1 Metal Raised Bed from Birdies Garden Products. Color: Slate Grey ❤️❤️❤️ This method is based on the Hugelkultur method and has saved me time and hundreds of dollars as I’ve filled up my raised beds. If you’re unfamiliar with this method be sure to check out #hugelkultur How I layer from the bottom: 1. Large logs 2. Sticks, leaves, yard debris Push down and make sure this later is compacted. Water. 3. Raw compost, food scraps, coffee grounds, etc. 4. Top soil 5. Compost/manure 6. Organic potting soil 7. Combination of worm castings, vermiculite, coco coir. Mix top 6 inches well to incorporate. Water well and let settle for a few days before planting. After planting be sure to mulch well with favorite mulch. If logs, sticks and leaves are unavailable in your yard try asking neighbors or community waste centers. They often have it available for free! As always it’s about being efficient and enjoying the process, it does not have to be perfect! fill a raised garden bed with me 🪵 one of the most cost effective ways to fill a raised bed is by using different materials. bags of soil can be expensive & we want to add more variety to our soil! + cardboard - suppresses weeds + sticks - helps to add space between all the material to aerate the soil & will break down over time + leaves/clippings - another great free resource that will break down into organic material in your bed + compost - helps to improve texture & drainage & replenish nutrients + mulch - regulates soil temperature, suppresses weeds & conserves moisture + fertilizer - give your plants extra support by adding this in now some tips: when gathering cardboard, make sure to take off any tape or stickers and try to save boxes with as little ink as necessary instead of raking & bagging leaves to throw out, save your leaves to add to your bed take advantage when we have windy days to gather sticks that may fall into your yard or collect stick on your next walk microlife all purpose fertilizer is my favorite to use - you can’t find it in a lot of places, but comment below and i’ll text you where i get it compost is not all created equally. make sure to find a good brand. sadly, compost at big box stores aren’t actually compost make sure to follow along & ask any questions you have! gardening is so much more fun when we are doing it together. happy gardening! ✨ . . . . #raisedgardenbeds #backyardgarden #gardentips #beginnergardener #texasgardening #backyardhomestead #backyardgardening

Why containers? Easy to maintain, no weeding, controlled soil, controlled moisture, oh and fun. Lots and lots of FUN. Here are my top tips to get your garden up and running. Scratch that - up and GROWING! - Boxes: | had these custom made and I designed them myself to my specifications. They are made from CA redwood which is an excellent material because it has minimal fade and it ages beautifully. Make sure you are using untreated wood if you re planning on growing food in your boxes so harmful chemicals don't taint your vegetation. The dimensions of this box are 3' x 6' by 3' deep and raised off the ground by 2') - Soil & Rock. Make sure you have drainage holes. Start with a layer of rock, like large marble rock (4.00/bag at Lowes) then I alternate in equal portions starting with one layer of gardening soil then one layer of potting mix. Keep alternating the gardening soil and potting mix until you get 4" from the top. Mix them together with a trowel but you don't need to be obsessive. The potting mix gives GREAT fertilizer and the gardening soil provides excellent drainage. - Plant! This planter might seem sparse right now but trust me in about 3 weeks it will be busting with squash, strawberries and pepper plants. Unsure of how many plants to plant in one space? I recommend the book Square Foot Gardening. This has been an indispensable resource for me over the past 10 years that I have been container gardening. Comment 'garden' below for a link to the book as well as a few things to get you started! Most importantly know this- you will fail. Gardening is one of the only hobbies where failure is not only expected but guaranteed. The thrill of gardening is trial and error. So just know that going in. But I tell you this, a tomato never tasted as good as it does fresh off the vine, grown by your own hands. Go forth, water frequently and get to gardening! You'll love it. 🏷️ home hacks, gardening tips, container gardening, garden inspiration, gardening how to
