Comment SPRING, and I’ll send you a link to my garden beds and everything I used to get them ready for spring planting. 🌱🌱 It’s time to refresh our gardens for spring, y’all! Here is what i do after each season to get mine ready for new plants! The best part - the bags of worm castings and fertilizer usually lasts me all year. And I usually only have to buy one bag of compost to split among all 4 beds! We trying to save money over here, okay?! How do you refresh your garden beds? Today I’m prepping one of our raised beds to get it ready for cold tolerant crops. First up: compost. As organic matter breaks down, microbes like bacteria and fungi release nutrients and improve soil structure—creating a rich, healthy environment for plants to thrive. Then I add organic all-purpose fertilizer, a slow-release blend packed with natural ingredients like kelp meal, feather meal, and alfalfa. It feeds plants gradually and increases plant yields. After that, it’s time to plant! I’m tucking in hardy spring starts like kale, spinach, lettuce, cauliflower, and broccoli, and sowing direct seeds like carrots, peas, arugula, cilantro, radishes, parsley and calendula. These cold-tolerant crops love the early spring weather—and it’s always exciting to fill a bed with life again after a long winter. I’ll make another video in a few weeks to show you the bed once it starts to fill in. Let me know if you have any questions about garden bed prep and spring planting! My number 1 tip for spring garden prep: feed the soil, not the plant. Comment BUCKWHEAT for a link to seeds. Just 1/4 pound will cover 180 sq feet, or a 10x18’ garden space. If you want incredible veggies and flowers, try a spring cover crop. I use fast-growing varieties like buckwheat as soon as danger of frost passes. In 60 days, you can trample or tarp the cover crop and use it as a nutrient rich mulch to plant your tomatoes, peppers, and summer veggies directly into. The cover crop acts as a living mulch that: ✅ Suppresses weeds (no back-breaking weeding!) ✅ Aerates soil naturally without tilling which improves root growth and water absorption ✅ Replenishes the soil with organic matter and nitrogen ✅ Creates the perfect environment for healthy roots ✅ Feeds pollinators with crucial early season nectar and pollen It takes less than 5 minutes to plant and saves me HOURS of work. When it’s time to plant my veggies, I just chop it down and leave the green matter right on top of the soil. It’s a complete game-changer! Have you ever tried this? ** there have been SO MANY questions about this that I’d like to do a special q&a live session on my subscriber account. I’ll be setting this up for Tuesday Jan 13 at 12pm est!

Budget, ground conditions and maintenance. 🍓What To Grow: This may seem like an obvious point, but think through what you eat the most of, your time commitment and if you plan on preserving. 🪵 Soil & Compost: If you are in-ground gardening your soil choices and amendments will be different than starting fresh in a raised bed. March isn’t planting season (yet)… it’s prep season 🌱 In Zone 7A/7B, this is what I’m doing right now: • Adding compost to beds • Turning & waking up the soil • Direct sowing cold-hardy crops (peas, spinach, radish, carrots) • Starting warm-season seeds indoors • Cleaning up dead growth (but leaving pollinator habitat where I can) • Checking irrigation + fixing what winter broke • Planning layout before I get excited and overcrowd everything This is the slow work that makes June look effortless. How to get your garden ready for spring! 🌞 Here are a few garden tasks to help you get ahead for the year, so you can grow a thriving and bountiful garden. 🌷 It’s still a little cold outside at the moment but there are a few seeds you can sow now including chillies, onions and leeks. It would also be a great time to tackle some garden maintenance jobs, I used @3inoneuk oils to get rid of the rust on gate hinges and pruners - jobs that I won’t have time to do in the height of summer! 💚 What are you doing in your garden to get ahead for the year?

Comment COOL if you’d rather follow a plan than guess your way through the garden. 🌱 I used to think gardening was just luck too, but really it’s all about timing, choosing the right crops, and sticking to a plan that actually works in real life. That’s why I put together my Cool Season Planner. It walks you through the fall garden week by week so you can feel confident instead of wondering, “Am I already behind?” Comment COOL and I’ll send you the link! 🍂

fill a raised garden bed with me 🪵 one of the most cost effective ways to fill a raised bed is by using different materials. bags of soil can be expensive & we want to add more variety to our soil! + cardboard - suppresses weeds + sticks - helps to add space between all the material to aerate the soil & will break down over time + leaves/clippings - another great free resource that will break down into organic material in your bed + compost - helps to improve texture & drainage & replenish nutrients + mulch - regulates soil temperature, suppresses weeds & conserves moisture + fertilizer - give your plants extra support by adding this in now some tips: when gathering cardboard, make sure to take off any tape or stickers and try to save boxes with as little ink as necessary instead of raking & bagging leaves to throw out, save your leaves to add to your bed take advantage when we have windy days to gather sticks that may fall into your yard or collect stick on your next walk microlife all purpose fertilizer is my favorite to use - you can’t find it in a lot of places, but comment below and i’ll text you where i get it compost is not all created equally. make sure to find a good brand. sadly, compost at big box stores aren’t actually compost make sure to follow along & ask any questions you have! gardening is so much more fun when we are doing it together. happy gardening! ✨ . . . . #raisedgardenbeds #backyardgarden #gardentips #beginnergardener #texasgardening #backyardhomestead #backyardgardening
