Today I was interviewed live on the air for Fox Report on Fox News to discuss the recent gator “attack” on an unfortunate canoer. What happened is heartbreaking, and my heart truly goes out to the family. But I think it’s important we look at the full context. This wasn’t a case of an alligator attacking in a predatory way, it was not stalking or hunting—it was a defensive reaction after the canoe unintentionally passed over the animal. The gator was in shallow water and was likely pinned by the canoe, causing it to react defensively and thrash, and sadly the 61yr old woman fell out of the canoe directly onto the gator, meeting her tragic end. During my interview I explained how unusual this was and how it shouldn’t be chalked up to alligator aggression but tragically bad luck being at the wrong place at the wrong time. I also just posted a long form video discussing all my thoughts on this incident. I can post the link to that video, and my Fox News interview, in the comments. Nuisance gator trappers euthanized two large gators in the area where this happened. Typically they’ll kill every large alligator in the immediate area after a fatality. Whether it’s the “right” gator is usually irrelevant to the state, and gators involved in fatalities are always euthanized. Following the tragic death of a 2yr old at Disney in 2015, they euthanized 250 gators on Disney property. If this upsets you, remember that NINE THOUSAND “nuisance” gators that didn’t cause a fatality were euthanized last year alone. We need better public education about living alongside wildlife and acting responsibly; never feed a gator, keep kids and pets away from any water in Florida, and never swim in gator habitat.

A home security camera in Cape Coral, Florida, captured rare footage of an alligator returning a missing baby to its doorstep. Police say the child had wandered from a nearby yard before being found by the animal near a drainage canal. The video shows the alligator placing the baby safely on the porch and retreating to the water. The infant was unharmed and reunited with the parents. Wildlife officials called the behavior highly atypical but confirmed the animal acted without aggression.

So I guess this is where you push down in order for them to release in case of an attack?? Hmmm 🤔 Alligators possess a specialized palatal valve (throat flap) located near the back of tongue. The valve seals off the throat, preventing water from entering the esophagus and trachea. I asked AI what to do in case of an attack, this was the response: In the event of an attack by an alligator, some sources suggest targeting the palatal valve to potentially escape: Push the arm deeper / Attempt to manipulate the valve: One tactic described is to try and push down on the valve, which might cause the alligator to release its grip due to water flooding its mouth and throat. Now, who will even remember this in the middle of chaos and as they quickly roll your arm into spaghetti? Best just to keep your distance.. do not attempt.
