Its single runway (13/31) was hemmed in by mountains and dense urban development, which forced aircraft to execute the famous low-altitude visual maneuver guided by the checkerboard marker on a hillside—one of the last major commercial approaches requiring that level of manual precision. During Hong Kong’s rapid economic rise in the late 20th century, Kai Tak became a critical global gateway, handling tens of millions of passengers despite severe space and noise constraints. By the 1990s, safety margins and capacity limits made replacement unavoidable, and operations ceased in 1998, transferring to the newly built Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok.
