Day 44/75 becoming an Accredited Gemologist ~ Synthetic & Treated Gem Identification (module 2 of my course). Asterism is a phenomenon displayed in certain gemstones, most commonly Corundum, when cut in cabochon. I was inspired to make this video based on a DM I got asking whether it was possible to make synthetic start sapphires… and here is confirmation that it is! Synthetic Star Corundum is grown through the Verneuil process (aka flame fusion) and interestingly the original boule will not display any phenomenon but needs to go through treatment to produce it. Kyanite is known for its striking blue color that can look much like a fine sapphire. One of the more unique properties of Kyanite is its hardness varies! In one crystal direction it has a hardness of 4 to 5 on the Mohs scale. In another direction, it’s much harder at a 6 to 7. Kyanite is also used in porcelain products because it can withstand very high temperatures and it is also used in spark plugs and other ceramic components. The name Kyanite comes from the greek word “kayos” meaning blue, although the mineral wasn’t official named until 1789! . . . 👉So, did you get it right?
