🔍💎 Can You Tell Which Red Gem Is Which? 💎🔍 Our students took on a real gem challenge today — identifying five look-alike red stones using only gemological instruments! They compared natural ruby, spinel, tourmaline, rhodolite garnet, and synthetic ruby, testing each one with: 💡 Polariscope for optic character 💧 Refractometer for RI readings 🔬 Microscope for inclusions ⚖️ Hydrostatic balance for specific gravity It was a true test of observation and skill — and a fun reminder that not all red gems are what they seem! ❤️ #GemClass #GemologyStudents #GemstoneChallenge #AIGSSchool #AIGSLab #GemstoneLearning #GemEducation #GemSchool #GemLab #GemologistInTraining

🚨Real or Fake Gemstone?🤯 . . . . . . . . This is a Synthetic Ruby that was created by the flame fusion process. Here’s how we know! ✅ ~1.77 RI in Refractometer ✅ Doubly Refractive in Polariscope ✅ Reactive to UV light (High Chromium Content) ✅ Curved Striae observed in the microscope 👉So, did you get it right? Let me know in the comments!👇 📚 Cool! A Boule! Why does it look like that? This synthetic ruby boule was grown by the flame fusion process. This is where powdered ingredients are dropped through a very hot flame. These ingredients are melted by the flame and drip on a rotating starter crystal. The boule starts thin and small, and becomes wider layer by layer. #ruby #jewelry #gemstone

Natural ruby ? But “natural” doesn’t always mean untreated — or valuable. Here’s what the tests revealed ⬇️ 🔍 Refractive Index 1.77 → exactly where corundum should be 🔍 Polariscope Blinking during rotation → doubly refractive → consistent with ruby ⚖️ Specific Gravity Calculated at 3.95 → slightly below typical natural ruby → first sign something might be off 🔬 Microscope Amphibole crystals → proof of natural origin But also: • Blue flashes at certain angles • Flattened gas bubbles • Fractures filled with glass These are clear indicators of glass-filling treatment. 🔦 Long-wave UV Bright red glow → intensified by the glass content Final verdict: 💎 Natural ruby — glass filled This treatment significantly lowers the stone’s value and often falls outside acceptable trade standards. 👉 Follow to see how I identify every stone that comes through my hands. #gemstones #joalysparis #garnet #tsavorite

Gemstone facts bet you didn't know with @fantaseajewelry 💎 Ruby and sapphire are actually the same gem! Both are varieties of the mineral corundum, with different trace elements creating the different colors. When corundum is red (colored by chromium) it’s called Ruby, when it is any other color, including colorless, it’s called sapphire. 💎 Sapphire comes in many different colors, like purple, pink, yellow, orange, green, and even colorless, color change and bi-color! The only color it doesn’t occur in is red - because that would be Ruby. 💎 Other well known “gem families” include the beryl family, which includes emerald, aquamarine, morganite and heliodor (or golden beryl). Amethyst and citrine are both gem varieties of quartz, and moonstone and labradorite are both varieties of feldspar. 💎 The garnet group is a little different! But we'll share the details on that one in a later video 🤓 . . . . . #instagramhacks #gemfacts #gemstonefacts #gemwisdom #geminfo #gemoftheday #gemfactfriday #zircon #gemologyrocks #bluezircon #decemberbirthstone #reels #ruby #sapphire #corundum #explorepage #instagems #gemsofinstagram #birthstones #gemstonesofinstagram #ihavethisthingwithgems #ibetchadidntknow #gemnerd

😳Real or Fake Gemstone?🧐 Free lesson👇 . . . . . . . . . . . . This is a synthetic ruby that was created using the Flux Growth Process. Because it can be manufactured in practically unlimited quantities, I consider this to be a “fake” gemstone, though gemologists typically don’t use the term “fake” as it’s not specific enough to identify it. For reference, this synthetic flux grown ruby is 10.02 cts. and was acquired for $4.02 on the streets of Bangkok. If this were a natural, unheated Burmese ruby, the price would be in the millions. . . . . 👉So, did you get it right? Let me know in the comments!👇 . . . 💎Flux Growth Process💎 A mixture of aluminum oxide (AL2O3) is combined with a small amount of chromium and is placed in a crucible (a container typically made out of platinum & iridium). 🧪 A flux (lead oxide or another chemical) is also added to the crucible, which acts like a solvent. 🔥 The crucible is heated to high temperatures (usually above 2000°F) in a furnace. Allowing the aluminum oxide and chromium to dissolve into the flux. ⏳ This solution is then cooled very slowly (often over weeks or months). As it is cooling, ruby crystals begin to form and grow. 🔨 After the crucible is allowed to fully cool, the crucible is broken open and the ruby crystals are carefully removed from the hardened flux. 💍 Lastly, they are cleaned, cut into gemstones and used in jewelry! . . . . . . ‼️DO IT YOURSELF: LEARN TO SPOT FAKE GEMS‼️ I teach hundreds of students around the world to spot real diamonds and precious metals, along with common fake gems and jewelry with just a few small, simple and inexpensive tools! 👉If you’d like to try out a FREE gemology lesson from Real or Fake 101, comment the word ‘Lesson’ and I’ll send it to you right away!. . . . . . . . #gems #gemstone #gemology #jewelrygram #jewels #instajewels #fashionjewelry #jewelrylover #costumejewelry #ruby #syntheticruby #fake #ring #rings #sparkle #jewelry #instagood #fashion #jewelryaddict #realorfake #instajewelry #jewelryoftheday #gemstonejewelry #uniquejewelry

Would you know if your ruby was heat-treated or your emerald filled with oil? Rubies, sapphires, and emeralds are among the most frequently treated gemstones, and not all sellers are transparent about it. Treatments can enhance appearance, but they also impact value. That’s why certificates from reputable gemological labs are essential. Trusted institutions like SSEF, Bellerophon and Gübelin provide critical verification and ensure the stone’s identity, origin, and treatment status. But certificates alone aren’t enough. Real protection comes from working with experts who inspect each gem closely and have a reputation built on trust. True experts rely on decades of experience examining thousands of stones to detect subtle indicators that others would miss entirely. It’s this combination of lab analysis and human expertise that ensures every gemstone lives up to its value.
