“The fact is that women do have a history, that they have participated in making history, but we have not—until very recently—recognized that.” Historian, educator and author Gerda Lerner on how women have been excluded from historical narratives, from an interview with Jeffrey Mishlove from his program Thinking Allowed published in 2010. Gerda Lerner (1920-2013) is known as the “godmother of women’s history” for her efforts to reshape history as an academic discipline and public-facing field. She arrived in the US in 1939 after her family fled Austria. She worked a range of jobs while also writing poetry and fiction and being active in political groups. Her first book, the novel No Farewell, was published in 1955. She enrolled at the New School for Social Research, where she taught (while still an undergrad) what is considered the first regular course on women’s history. As a graduate student, she wrote her dissertation on abolitionists Sarah and Angelina Grimké against the wishes of her advisors. In her first academic job at Sarah Lawrence she established the Master of Arts Program in Women’s History; she went on to found the first PhD program on women’s history at the University of Madison, Wisconsin. Her publications—including The Creation of Patriarchy (1986), The Creation of Feminist Consciousness: From the Middle Ages to 1870 (1993), and edited volumes Black Women in White America (1973) and The Female Experience (1976)— furthered her efforts to establish women’s history as an accepted field of academic study. In 1979, Gerda Lerner chaired The Women’s History Institute at Sarah Lawrence College, where organizers decided to advocate for a “National Women’s History Week,” inspired by successful efforts to celebrate Women’s History Week in Sonoma County, CA. This work led to President Jimmy Carter issuing the first Presidential Proclamation in 1980 declaring the Week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. Things grew from there, with Women’s History Month becoming adopted nationwide and internationally.

She fled Nazi Austria, rebuilt her life in America, and then did something revolutionary—she made women’s history impossible to ignore. Gerda Lerner didn’t just write about the past; she reshaped how it’s taught, founding the first graduate programs in women’s history and helping launch National Women’s History Month. Because of her, women are no longer footnotes. #WomensHistory #GerdaLerner #FeministScholar #HistoryMatters #WomensRights

😅 📹: @gnt
