Behind every project, service request, and smart decision, there’s a map making it possible. Here’s to the team helping our City work smarter, safer, and better every day.

They really love maps. Today is GIS Day, which celebrates the technology of Geographic Information Systems. Maps, yes. But GISs are more than just maps. They’re computer systems used in science and other industries that analyze and display data connected to specific locations or regions. Picture it: data connected to maps that allows us to uncover patterns, understand trends, monitor changes, perform forecasting, and make better decisions. Here at our district, our GIS team assists with virtually everything we do, from producing 3D models that show how our jetty structures have degraded over time (and thus how we need to repair or rehabilitate them) to giving our park rangers apps that shows areas where they have the strongest radio signal. They help our engineers perform inspections and our botanists track the location of invasive species. They help our navigation team, our surveyors, our contractors, and even our cultural resource specialists do their jobs better and more efficiently every day. Some teachers even post their whole curriculum in YouTube format. 🗺️ For ArcGIS Pro, ESRI has a website page for every tool and workflow you could need. They describe what the tool is, what you need for it to work, options for the regular interface and if you wanted to write it in code, and tons of helpful links for more information. QGIS has their own version of this as well I’ve never tried it though. 👩🏼‍💻 For R, you can install a package called SWIRL that is a free course to learn and practice using the code. Mapping is a super powerful tool to learn and it gets less intimidating the more you learn how to look up things 💚 #gis #gradschool #womeninstem #education

#GISDay is on Thursday! 🎉 GIS stands for geographic information system, which is the use of computer programming to visually represent, analyze, and manage geographic information. At CGS, we primarily use the GIS software ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap, but many other GIS software options are out there, including QGIS, MapInfo Professional, and MapGuide. Which program you or your organization chooses to use depends on licensing and the scope of your project We love to spotlight the beautiful places our work takes us in Colorado’s great outdoors, but so much of our jobs at CGS take place behind a desk, including using GIS. Most of our current projects involve the use of spatial imagery and mapmaking in some capacity, relying on ArcGIS in the office and Avenza for field mapping. Some uses of GIS in our projects include… 🌐 Geologic mapmaking and data analysis 🌐 Identifying alluvial fans that may be at risk for post wildfire debris flow as part of our LiDAR-based Alluvial Fan (LAF) mapping project 🌐 Maintaining a collection of REST Services, which are public domain datasets accessed from remote GIS servers that can be incorporated into your projects 🌐 Various maps showing useful resources or hazards throughout the state, including geothermal, abandoned mine lands, seismic stations, and mineral resources.
