The hardest phrase for people is, “I don’t know”. Next time you’re in a group discussion try using it. It feels good to say. It also feels good to say things like, “I don’t have an opinion” or “I wasn’t there”. On most things, we aren’t experts. We just have surface level information that allows us to think we’re experts. Give yourself a break from being the smartest person alive and just say, “I don’t know.” #expertadvice #stfu #groupthink #myopinion

Here’s some research that changed my life about groupthink. As an organizational psychologist, I help people work better in groups, and this study blew my mind. There was a study where a group of people were brought in—some of the people were actors working with the researchers, and some were just regular people. They gave everyone two sticks. One was obviously longer than the other. When the researchers asked, “Which of these sticks is longer?” the actors went first and said, “This one,” pointing to the obviously shorter stick. Here’s the part of the study that is mind blowing: when they got to the people who were not actors, and asked, “Which one is longer?” they also said that the shorter one was longer. That’s groupthink. It’s a phenomenon where we can accidentally pick up the thinking of other people in the group—even if their thinking is totally wrong. It’s kind of like catching a cold. The people in the study who weren’t actors weren’t lying. They genuinely felt, in that moment, that the shorter stick was longer. In mainstream US culture, there can be a lot of hype about the idea of the “true self.” Part of why this research is powerful is that it highlights that none of us is a totally independent self. All of us are being deeply impacted by the people we’re around and how they think. It’s just part of how our human brains work. If you’re a facilitator and you want to protect a group from groupthink, you can have people say what they think privately or write it down before they say it in front of the group. That’s a technique you can try to help preserve variation and creativity and protect a group from accidentally getting sucked into one person’s bad idea. But being impacted by other people when we’re in groups? There’s no technique that can end that - it’s part of being a person! There’s maybe no individual self! Bwahahaha!!! #groupthink #psychology #groups #facilitation #lifechangingresearch

People are wonderful. I love individuals. I hate groups of people. I hate a group of people with a 'common purpose'. 'Cause pretty soon they have little hats. And armbands. And fight songs. And a list of people they're going to visit at 3am. So, I dislike and despise groups of people but I love individuals. Every person you look at; you can see the universe in their eyes, if you're really looking. #GeorgeCarlin #GroupThink #Individualism #CarlinWisdom #NonConformity
