Landing speeds aren’t guessed — they’re carefully calculated from aerodynamics, weight, and safety margins. Every aircraft has a reference landing speed (Vref) based on stall speed, aircraft weight, flap configuration, and air density. Heavier airplane? Higher Vref. More flaps? Lower speed. Pilots then add small corrections for wind, gusts, and runway conditions to make sure the wing always stays flying. What matters most is airspeed, not groundspeed. You can be landing into a 40-knot headwind and barely moving over the ground while still flying perfectly. That’s why a “negative landing speed” only works in math class and flight sims — in the real world, the wing only cares about the air flowing over it.
