In my opinion, our puppy programs are our most valuable service because a puppy is in imprint period, which means their brain is like a sponge absorbing everything they learn. Here, I’m using food to engage the nose and guide the puppy's head forward/up as she experiences the leash being out on. In the beginning, many puppies are unsure about the leash or even the approach to being leashed. This can lead to a puppy feeling trapped when being leashed, which will not be good for confidence. Doing this will also create an engaging experience during leashing as you are using food to engage the nose, the puppy is moving towards the leash and being rewarded with both food and affection from their new leader, you! I like using a slip lead for this exercise as we can make the loop very big and less threatening to the puppy. You don't have to use a slip lead as your walking tool, but for this exercise, it's ideal. The goal is to build an amazing relationship of trust, respect, and love with your puppy. That is built by making time to teach them things and make them positive experiences. Putting in the effort in puppyhood is how you develop a dog who views you as a parent-figure who they want to be proud of them. My adult dogs love to make me proud of their behavior because it’s the stuff I taught them as puppies that was a positive experience that just continued to adulthood! Remember, being a leader and successful parent figure must be earned, and the best time to earn that trust, respect, and love is during puppyhood. I see so many people wasting precious time in puppyhood with high levels of arousal, lack of leadership, and unconsciously creating the problems they will deal with when puppy gets older. Many of those people come to me with their adolescent or adult dogs with unwanted behaviors that were developed in puppyhood. While we have incredible success helping people solve problems with our approach of Dog Psychology based training, prevention in puppyhood is much easier than intervention as an adult. Don't waste puppyhood!

It’s not about asking your dog to go lay on a bed for the sake of going and laying on a bed. It’s about teaching them how to be neutral to the world around them — which helps with reactivity, fearfulness, chaoticness, and more. It helps YOU understand their regulation patterns more too (or lack of them). I am a guide dog and it is my job to keep Mum safe while guiding her to where she would like to go. Because I was homeschooled by Mum, as a team, we do things a little differently. For one, I have never guided anyone else other than Mum. Except in the beginning of my training, and that was just for a short distance in a straight line. Guide dogs that come from programs have worked with multiple trainers and guided multiple people. They may even have had multiple puppies raisers. Skye was up for the challenge. She is a blind guide dog handler who also used the unifly guide harness before her guide dog retired. I know Skye very well, so Mum thought this would be a good thing. She could not have been more wrong. Thank goodness Skye was not relying on me for real to guide her, because I was all over the place. Mum says I looked like I had never had a day of training in my life! In reality, I was just confused. . But is Mum disappointed in me? Not at all.
