If Half Dome is on your list, this matters! Today is the first day of the application period. The Half Dome preseason lottery runs from March 1 through March 31 on Recreation.gov for May–October hikes. I saw Half Dome once and knew I’d be back. Six years later, that idea turned into a 14-hour climb with sustained elevation gain, steady pacing, and a full day on our feet. Grateful to be one of the 300 hikers allowed to summit on a given day. If you’re aiming for 2026, start earlier than you think. Here are 3 practical steps: 1️⃣ Enter the permit lottery: Applications run March 1–31 on Recreation.gov. 2️⃣ Build endurance with a pack. You’ll carry everything for the day: – layers – water and food – gloves for the cables – basic first aid – whatever else you rely on for 14 hours outside Train with weight so nothing feels new on summit day. 3️⃣ Get comfortable with exposure and hanging on. Spend time hiking steep terrain. Add some bar hangs or loaded carries into your workout routine. Preparation changes everything. I found out I’d have the opportunity to summit Half Dome last Spring and I knew I didn’t want the cables to be a part I worried about. So, I trained my grip strength, exposure to steep terrain, and time spent above the ground learning to stay steady. Could I have summited without training? Maybe. But that preparation opened more doors than I expected... I found a passion for rock climbing, via ferratas (check out the linked reel 🪢) and overall moving confidently on and off the trail. Hiking Half Dome could absolutely “ruin all other hikes” as it IS one of the most epic hikes in the US! We’ve tried for years to secure permits to hike Half Dome to a point we almost gave up on it, but we’re so glad we tried in 2025! The Half Dome lottery opens for the entire month of March and results are announced in early April. There are also permits that you can try for daily while the cables are up. If you choose to hike it while the cables are down, it is an option, but there may be snow/ice on the trail, especially in the upper elevations. Half Dome is considered one of the most dangerous hikes in the country. It is a very strenuous 17+ mile hike (depending on where you park) and 5300 ft elevation gain. There’s nothing too technical about the hike itself until you reach the cables section. Many people see the cables and decide it’s not for them and are happy with finishing the trail at the top of Sub Dome. The cables section is steep and even slippery in areas due to the polished granite from so much use. If you have a fear of heights, the cable section is not for you. Getting frozen in fear while on the cables not only puts yourself at risk, but also other hikers on the cables too. Our best (and realistic) advice is if you have a fear of heights, just be sure to do enough research before attempting the hike and know your limits.
