Back by request: a full, slower version of my signature knot: the Old Bertie. I’ve been tying this knot since the very beginning of my Instagram journey And it has become my go-to. To my delight, I later discovered it’s also a favourite of some of the most respected and influential voices in classic menswear: Kirby Allison, Hugo Jacomet, and Mark Cho. Don’t believe me? Feel free to watch their tutorials on YouTube. There are two versions of this knot, in fact, with a very subtle differences. I do Mark’s version. But why is this such a good knot? The Old Bertie strikes the perfect balance: Not as slim and simple as the Four-in-Hand and not as bulky as the Half Windsor. This makes it great to wear with all types of collars. It lives somewhere in between, refined, versatile, and slightly unexpected. It might be mistaken for one of those classics but there are subtle differences that set it apart. Here’s the half windsor for those that asked about it - tied with the lime green hampton tie . It’s a more formal , some say more corporate knot and also symmetrical for those who love that look . How to tie a Half Windsor. The half-Windsor knot originated in the 1950s as a simplified version of the larger, symmetrical Windsor knot. Its history is directly tied to the sartorial influence of the Duke of Windsor, whose fashion sense inspired the original Windsor knot in the 1930s.  * A wider knot: Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, became a style icon in the 1930s known for his elegant yet relaxed taste in clothing, which he dubbed "dress soft". * Creating the look: To achieve a wider, more prominent triangular tie knot, the Duke did not invent a new tying method. Instead, he simply used a conventional four-in-hand knot with specially made ties from a thicker, heavier cloth. * The public's imitation: The public, seeing his distinctive look, assumed he was using a unique tying technique. To replicate the Duke's full, symmetrical knot with standard ties, people developed the more complex, multi-step Windsor knot.
