In 2015, the U.S. Treasury announced plans to replace Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill. At the time, many Americans didn’t know much about him, even though he helped shape the nation’s financial system, served as the first Secretary of the Treasury, and co-wrote the Federalist Papers. That changed with the Broadway musical Hamilton (which I love️). Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show told Hamilton’s story through hip-hop and sparked new interest in his legacy. The once-overlooked founding father quickly became a cultural icon, especially among younger audiences. Public support surged, and the plan to remove him from the bill was dropped. I’ve always thought this dynamic was interesting, as one of the biggest themes in the Hamilton musical is that being remembered by history is dependent on who tells your story.
