During the winter, snowshoe hares are white to blend in with the snow. And during the spring and summer, snowshoe hares turn a reddish-brown to camouflage with dirt and rocks. It was pretty amazing to see two Orkney hares this morning, right outside the house. They were busy cleaning themselves just beyond the window – and they were impressively large! Their grooming sessions are a normal part of their routine — a bit like a cat’s daily maintenance, but on a larger, wilder scale! If you’re in an area with heather or grassy patches nearby, they likely use the garden or surrounding land as a safe resting/feeding spot. #orkneywildlife #orkney #orkneyuncovered #hares

LEVERET FEEDING! ❤️ These two hare leverets (Lepus europaeus) came into us from another rescue centre after being found weak and lethargic on a farm. They were only a day or so old when they came in. Hare leverets are born fully furred, eyes open, and above ground usually in long grass. They are also left alone all day with the mother usually only coming to feed them once a day in the evening. From the condition of the leverets sadly it was obvious they had been abandoned. As leverets are such shy creatures they require very specific care and quiet environments. Our founder Megan very often takes the leverets we get in to take on rearing them to give them more intensive 1:1 care. 🌿 Spring in ‘hare’ step… but why? Last May, we spotted a lone hare exploring new areas of restoration. (our site (new wetland). Now? There’s more than one, so it’s not just the Lapwings exploring this new wetland territory. Hares are usually solitary—unlike rabbits, which live in colonies and warrens—so seeing a pair (or even more) raises an interesting question… Are they forming a loose group? A ‘drove’? If so, it could mean something exciting: ✔️ There’s enough food to support them ✔️ Our habitat restoration is starting to work The night vision on our trail cameras is already catching glimpses of the antics of these nocturnal hares.
