RDL tips:
Elevating your toes or heels when performing RDLs
9,794,435

RDL tips: Elevating your toes or heels when performing RDLs will not provide any additional benefits for training the glutes and hamstrings. The hamstrings and glutes are connected to both the hip and the knee. Therefore, elevating the heels or toes does not affect the range of motion. However, due to this elevation, it becomes more challenging to maintain balance and stability throughout the movements, which increases the risk of injuries. #gymtips #gymrat #gluteworkout #glute #legday #gymgirl #gymmotivation #fyp #rdl

It hits SO different 😮‍💨🍑 I wish I knew this sooner because B-stance (single-leg) RDLs with wall support has been a game-changer for me. For the longest time, my RDLs felt like… nothing. Now my glutes and hamstrings are finally on fire because this setup helps with balance, stability, and a clean hip hinge (especially if you’re newer). I’m not a coach, I’m just sharing what helped me finally feel my glutes and stay more stable. Here’s what worked for me: 1. Stand a couple feet from a wall. Lightly place your back foot on it for balance (no pushing). 2. Push your hips back like you’re closing a car door with your butt (not a squat). 3. Keep your core tight and back neutral (no big arch, no rounding). 4. Keep the dumbbell close to your leg the whole time. 5. Stop at the top when you feel your glutes (don’t “lean back” and lose tension). Common things I mess up (so you don’t have to 😅) 🚫 Pushing off the back leg 🚫 Turning it into a squat 🚫 Letting the weight drift away 🚫 Leaning back at the top Also… I had to drop my weight to feel it better. Tempo that helped me feel it more: Down 1 sec → hold 3 sec → up 3 sec I genuinely wish I knew this sooner. SAVE this for your next leg day and let your glutes thank you later 👀🍑 If you’re trying to feel less awkward in the gym, I made a free guide that helped me. It’s in my bio 💖 #bstancerdl #singlelegrdl #rdlform #gluteworkout #glutegains hamstrings legdayworkout gymtipsforwomen gymbeginner womenwholift fitnessjourney fatlossjourney workoutform gymconfidence

🏋🏽‍♀️ Heel elevated Dumbbell RDL (Romanian Deadlifts) Elevating your heels instead of your toes during a dumbbell RDL fundamentally changes the biomechanics of the movement, shifting the focus and how your body balances. Heel elevation promotes a more vertical shin, which helps prevent the common mistake of turning the RDL into a squat-like movement. We do these toe elevated, heel elevated, and flat footed. #fitnessat40 #rdl

#SquatForm #Biomechanics #LowerBodyTraining #GluteActivation #QuadFocus #GluteTraining #StrengthTraining #FunctionalFitness #LegDayWorkout #SportsScience #MobilityTraining #ExerciseScience #PowerBuilding #HipHinge #SquatTips

Using a small block in front of the knee helps control the movement during step-downs. It prevents the knee from drifting too far forward or collapsing back and forces you to move slowly and stay in control. That lets you push the hips back safely and create a deeper stretch in the glutes and hamstrings. When you come back up, that stretch translates into much better glute engagement. Control the position. Feel the glutes work. #legtraining #stepdown #controlledreps #trainwithintent #strengthtraining

LEARN HOW TO RDL This tool was taught to me years ago and it really helped. If you struggle with your RDL, this is perfect for you. Grab a broom or dowel Create contact with your tailbone, mid/upper back and back of your head Hinge (think pushing your hips back) only as far as you can keeping contact with all three spots. Common mistakes: if you have lost contact with your tailbone often means going to far, or rounding through your upper back which sometimes is a lack of lat engagement when holding dumbbells Losing contact with your mid/upper this is normally because you lack core engagement. Making sure you keep your core involved will prevent lower back pain. Lastly, losing contact or (pushing through) the dowel with your head means you’re likely looking up instead of forward. Think neutral spine all the way through the crown of your head. I hope this is helpful!

❌ Elevating your toes in an RDL is NOT much glutes or hamstrings…. Man, have been meaning to post this for a long time lol so this is something I personally used to do myself as a coach years ago… mistake. I learned. Don’t be like me 10 years ago people! Elevating your HEELS in a squat is a good thing. A heel elevation then impacts your ability to push your knees forward and get deeper This is NOT the same thing with elevating toes in an RDL Elevating the toes will not impact your ability to hip extend. Your glutes and hamstrings are your hip extensors. Elevating the toes does not result in a further stretch of either It just feels like it which is commonly referred to these days as “sensation”. Don’t confuse sensation with actually a muscle being more optimally trained. Other sensation is the opposite For Glute biased RDL, we want to have a bend in the knees and push hips back as far as we can to the wall behind us… elevating the toes doesn’t increase this For a more hamstring biased Romanian which is really a more a straighter leg deadlift… we want just that. A straighter leg. Again, elevating the toes does not impact this Hope this clears this up as this is always asked in my Q and As. Trust me. If it was actually a positive for the RDL I would be doing it lol So take away Elevating HEELS on a squat can be a great thing and improve ability to get depth Elevating TOES on an RDL is not needed and does not offer more for hamstrings or glutes It’s just a sensation down the back of the leg Also, leads to more instability which means less weight lifted So ye hope that helps :)

may i present ✨the single leg RDL✨ so many variations, so many benefits. you can use dumbbells, kettlebells, landmine (maybe a video for another time 👀) regardless, here you’re working balance, stability, core, glutes, and hamstrings (ALL at once) yeah you might have to go lighter on these, you’ll be humbled FOR SURE. but the carryover these also have into your other lifts (i don’t have a reason why you shouldn’t do these) push your ego aside, do the hard icky stuff and see how much of a difference it makes! #gym #legday #glutes #exercise

HERE’S WHY... I think that the single leg RDL is one of the most underrated exercises in the gym. It’s no secret we spend a lot more time in seated positions that cause our posterior chain to become weak. The single leg RDL challenges our posterior chain, hitting our lower body including our glutes, hamstrings and calves, all the way up through to our back extensors, lats, and erector spinae muscles. One of my favourite reasons for utilising this exercise is the emphasis it places on balance, stability, and control!! (And the glute burn is great🍑🔥) It’s a great addition to your workout plan, and honestly one of my go-to’s make sure you give it a go! RDL’s can be a little tricky if you are a beginner. Wall assisted single leg RDL’s are great for practicing the hip hinge technique. Placing your non-working leg on the wall, allows your working leg to better understand the movement. Pushing your glutes back towards the wall, makes you hinge your hips back rather than thinking of the movement just as an up and down movement. Remember to keep chin tucked, back neutral and core engaged throughout. Stretch as far as you can comfortably without using your back, pause and then return to starting position.
