Her’s was a Liverpool-based duo formed by Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading, who met as students at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Their sound was a distinct blend of "jangle-pop" and surf rock, characterized by shimmering guitar lines, melodic bass, and the use of a vintage drum machine. Between 2015 and 2019, they built a significant international following through their debut compilation, Songs of Her’s, and their only studio album, Invitation to Her’s. They became pioneers of the "bedroom pop" movement, influencing a generation of DIY artists by proving that a sophisticated, cinematic sound could be produced with minimal equipment and a sense of humor. The band’s trajectory was moving toward mainstream success when they embarked on a 19-date North American tour in early 2019. Following a sold-out show in Phoenix, Arizona, the duo and their tour manager, Trevor Engelbrektson, were killed in a head-on collision caused by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 10. The tragedy occurred on March 27, 2019, as they were traveling toward Santa Ana, California. In the years since, their streaming numbers have continued to climb into the hundreds of millions, and their families have established the "Friends of Her's" fund to honor their legacy by supporting local charities in the city where they first met. #hers #whatoncewas #hersband #popmusıc #nightpost

One of the most heartbreaking stories in modern music, as members Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading tragically passed away in 2019 during a car accident while on tour in Phoenix, along with their tour manager. At the time, the duo was gaining growing recognition for their dreamy, nostalgic sound, making the loss feel even more devastating to fans and the indie music community. Their music, often centered on love, memory, and fleeting moments, took on an even deeper emotional weight after their passing. Their song What Once Was reflects these themes with a quiet, melancholic beauty, exploring the idea of love that has already passed and can now only exist in memory. The lyrics feel reflective and distant, as if looking back on something meaningful that can never be relived, while the soft, reverb-soaked guitars and gentle rhythm create a dreamlike atmosphere that blurs past and present. Fitzpatrick’s delicate vocal delivery adds a sense of vulnerability, making the emotion feel intimate and personal rather than dramatic. The song doesn’t try to resolve the feeling of loss—it lingers in it, capturing the bittersweet nature of remembering something that once meant everything. It’s this combination of real-life tragedy, emotional subtlety, and atmospheric sound that cements “What Once Was” as one of the most haunting and poignant songs in indie music. March 27th is seven years since a drunk driver killed Stephen Fitzpatrick, Audun Laading and their manager Trevor Engelbrektson. A few hours after they had concluded their live performance in Phoenix, Arizona, they were driving to Santa Ana, California for the final leg of their second North American tour before returning to the United Kingdom when a drunk driver merged into their lane and fatally collided head-on with their van. Ste and Audun were two extraordinarily kind, genuine and outgoing people. They created their band ‘Hers’ in 2015. They were only beginning their music career, and had years of exploration, growth, and ambition that would have given them it all. I see people all the time discovering Her’s. Their loss still impacts people years after their time ended, because we all know they should be here, creating and loving. They were especially loved in their town of Liverpool. Neither of them were actually from there, but they met there and began placing their roots. They were noticed on streets and in bars because they were as good of people as they were musicians. Drunk driving kills, distracted driving kills and I pray people learn to stop getting behind the wheel when impaired. Even if you know the road, even if home is close. Dont drive drunk. Call somebody, call an uber or walk. for my love Angelina I love you so much ❤️ and Arianna and Dea my darlings ❤️❤️ #stephenfitzpatrick #audunlaading #hersband #hers #drunkdrivingawareness

What once was and what could have been. For those unaware, Her's were a British indie band who quickly became a household name thanks to their song "What Once Was". While on tour in the US in 2019, their tour van was hit by a drunk driver who veered on to the wrong side of the road - ending the lives of both band members and their tour manager. #indiemusic #hers #whatoncewas

Her’s – What Once Was (Live at Paste Studios NYC, 2018) “What Once Was,” from the album Invitation to Her’s (2018), captures the dreamy, nostalgic sound that defined Her’s. In this intimate Paste Studios NYC session, the song feels even more delicate—stripped down, warm, and quietly hypnotic. Performed by Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading, the track blends soft guitar lines, subtle grooves, and melancholic vocals that reflect on memory and time. The live setting highlights their chemistry, with every note feeling effortless yet emotionally precise. Late 2010s indie music embraced lo-fi textures and nostalgic tones, and Her’s stood out by making it feel timeless rather than trendy. Their sound pulled from past decades but never felt dated—just honest and deeply human. This performance carries even more weight today, serving as a quiet reminder of a band whose music continues to resonate far beyond its time. #Hers #WhatOnceWas #InvitationToHers #IndiePop #LiveSession

Hers - What Once Was (Paste Studios, 2018) It’s difficult to revisit Her’s session at Paste Studios without feeling a sense of loss for the incredible potential Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading had. What Once Was captures the unique dream pop sound through its blend of surf rock influence and a real sense of longing. Although originally written about the transition into adulthood, the song serves as bittersweet for fans celebrating the undeniable talent the duo shared before their tragic passing in 2019 due to a car accident. Their passing left a void in the indie music world, yet the joy they radiated, especially here, continues to offer a beautiful, lasting connection for those of us who still find comfort in their sound. Her's' "What Once Was" is a mesmerizing masterpiece of dream-pop nostalgia that effortlessly bridges the gap between retro 80s melancholy and modern indie charm. Driven by a hypnotic, chorus-drenched guitar riff, an infectious, grooving bassline, and a steady drum-machine pulse, the track envelops the listener in a warm, sepia-toned haze. Stephen Fitzpatrick's rich, baritone croon floats above the shimmering instrumentation, feeling like a bittersweet transmission from a bygone era. It plays like the soundtrack to a twilight drive down an empty coastal highway, capturing the agonizing, yet comforting pull of looking in the rearview mirror. The lyrics paint a hazy picture of romantic reflection and regret—grappling with the desperate desire to rewind time and reclaim a connection that has quietly slipped through your fingers. It is a gorgeously atmospheric gem that perfectly encapsulates the heavy ache of fading memories and the beautiful, tragic finality of holding onto what used to be. . . . [hers, whatoncewas, dreampop, indiepop, retrovibes, melancholymusic, discovermusic, fyp, instagramstory] #hers #dreampop #musicdiscovery #nostalgia #fypppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp
