A look inside my brain as a high functioning + anxious girly 🧠 #highfunctioninganxiety #anxietycheck #anxiety #highfunctioning #explorepage✨

⏳ You need to know this about high functioning depression: The term itself is not a clinical diagnosis, but a term that has been used online to describe the experience of those who live with depressive symptoms and struggle to function but don’t cease to function. • This term is pretty useful as many people have a pre-conceived idea that good mental health is all about whether you can still get to work or not. They often feel undeserving of any support because they are not outwardly at rock bottom. • If you take one thing away from this video, let it be that the best time to start doing the right things for your mental health is the moment you think you could benefit from it. • Don’t wait until your mental health prevents you from functioning. That is a much longer and harder journey back. Feel free to share @drjulie ❤️ 👉For more insights check out my new book ‘Open When...’ It was an instant No.1 Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller. Available for -48% discount see link in bio. High functioning depression has two sides. Behind closed doors people struggle with imposter syndrome, guilt and feelings of inadequacy. To the world they look like they are successful “rock stars”. Seeking help for depression is a brave act and not a sign of weakness. Consult with your provider to find the best treatment options for you. #highfunctioningdepression #depression #highfunctioning #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #psychiatry

A few months ago I got diagnosed with ADHD. After years of feeling confused and discouraged by my own behaviour and decisions, I was finally able to get some clarity. On of the biggest thing I struggle with because of ADHD is executive dysfunction. I know I am not alone with this as executive dysfunction is a common challenge among those with ADHD. If you don’t already know, executive dysfunction disrupts the brain’s ability to regulate and manage higher-level functions. Sometimes it feels like what I said in this video, the desire to do things but feeling stuck. For years I thought it was laziness & a lack of motivation but it’s not. People who struggle with this often: - have time blindness - have a hard time organizing their thoughts & actions - struggle to start projects or complete projects - feel unproductive - procrastinate - forget things easily - dissociate - struggle with mood Note: this does not just apply to ADHD , but can also occur in other neurodevelopmental or neurological disorders. Here are some tips I have been implementing to help myself & my clients: 1. Break all your tasks into smaller tasks. When I say small, I truly mean small such 5-10 minutes. Larger tasks overwhelm us, we need to make them seem more manageable. 2. Set visual reminders! Put sticky notes around, write things down on paper or even use the background of your home screen to remind you what you need to be done 3. Recently, we had @nasneuro on our podcast who gave the amazing suggestion of doing the most difficult or dreadful task first. Once you get this out of the way, the motivation will follow 4. Establish routines. I know, this is a common suggestion for ADHD but it’s for a reason. Having a consistent schedule can help reduce decision-making fatigue and increase productivity. 5. Have an accountability partner where you both check in one one another and hold each other accountable. This will help you have more of a reason to complete your tasks 6. Make sure your basics are taken care of. Ensure you’re sleeping, eating & moving your body! Vc: @tahistwo on tt ❤️

What’s often called “high functioning” isn’t always functioning well. It’s often compensation. Many people who get labeled as “high functioning” are actually 2e (twice exceptional) — gifted (IQ 98th+ percentile) and living with a learning or developmental disability (ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, AuDHD, etc.) High ability can hide struggle. Strong output can mask regulation issues. Especially in females. That’s where overlap matters. This diagram doesn’t show diagnoses — it shows shared traits that exist across ADHD, autism, and giftedness. You can have a shared trait and only fall in one category. Those overlaps are why: • ADHD can be missed • Autism can be misunderstood • AuDHD can feel close but not quite right for some • And 2e often goes unnamed Overlap doesn’t mean the same nervous system. And “high functioning” doesn’t mean well supported. This isn’t about replacing labels. It’s about understanding why so many people never felt fully explained. 👉 Don’t ignore the last one. Now, there is an important reason I made this video when high functioning depression is not a clinical diagnosis. The term is being used across the Internet as people search for the language to describe their daily struggles with mental health. I think what this term has enabled many people to do, is acknowledge that depression does not begin on the day that you can’t get out of bed. You can be suffering intensely while going about your normal daily routine. If we wait until we cannot function before seeking help or working on recovery, we have a much bigger battle on our hands. So even if everyone in your life has no idea, the best time to work on your mental health is as soon as you notice these changes. 👉 For more on this you can pre-order my new book - Open When… (link in bio) or if you don’t have it already check out my million copy bestselling book - Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? (Currently -50% see link in bio). Filled with insights from therapy about how to deal with real life problems. Available in over 40 languages!

This poor woman was told over and over again that this was “just her age” and that if she was perimenopausal that she should just “wait it out.” This was ADHD. This was something that could be validated and intervened on. How long are people supposed to ignore their mental health symptoms just because they aren’t causing problems for anyone but themselves??

7 steps I’m Following👇🏻 If you have ADHD and goal-setting feels like pulling teeth Try this out (screenshot it) 😅 1️⃣ Stop setting “future-you” goals Your brain only understands now or lol-not-now. 😂 Setting a 6-month goal for ADHD is like ordering motivation on Temu… with no tracking number and no hope it will show up 2️⃣ Switch from outcome goals to identity goals “I’m losing 30 lbs” ❌ “I’m someone who moves daily” ✅ “I am a Spartan” ✅ Our ADHD brains love structure. Identities are structure. Willpower is a scam 3️⃣ Shrink the goal until it feels stupid simple Your goal isn’t “work out.” Your goal is “put on shoes.” If your goal requires a personality change, it’s too big. 4️⃣ Track showing up, not results Did you show up? Congrats. You win. ADHD brains quit when the scoreboard updates too slowly. 5️⃣ Add dopamine on purpose Music. Novelty. Rewards. Streaks. Raw-dogging fitness with discipline is for neurotypicals. 6️⃣ Make the goal visible or it doesn’t exist Out of sight = out of mind = out of the gym. If your goal isn’t staring at you daily, your brain already forgot it. 7️⃣ Stop trying to be perfect. Miss a day? Continue anyway Missing one day isn’t failure. Quitting because of it is. One bad day doesn’t delete the save file. ADHD doesn’t need more motivation. It needs better systems. Identity. Tiny step. Dopamine hit repeat 🔁 👇👇👇 If you have ADHD and want to learn how to Rewire your adhd brain to get fit, comment REWIRE to join the 21-Day ADHD Fitness Rewire Challenge 💪🧠 (We start Tomorrow! The 8 Executive Functions. Which ones are your biggest struggles as an ADHDer? #adhd #adhdinwomen #adhdsupport #executivedysfuntion #adhdawareness

High-functioning depression is not a clinical or diagnosed depression. High functioning depression is when you have symptoms of low mood, sadness, and other depressive symptoms. What distinguishes high functioning depression from other forms of depression is that individuals with these symptoms often maintain a relatively high level of functionality in their daily lives. Signs of High-Functioning Depression: 1) Deep sense of sadness - leaving you feeling isolated, disconnected, lonely, nothing fulfils you, a feeling of being empty. But getting on with everyday life to cope. 2) Lack of interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed 3) Masking symptoms - putting on a facade of “happiness” and functionality in public and hiding how they really feel. 4) Eacapism - activities like binge watching tv, excessive internet use, or substance use may be more common to cope. 5) Difficulty concentrating - trouble concentrating and making decisions or staying focused on tasks, even though you manage to fulfil your responsibilities. 6) Persistent self doubt - there is a tendency towards self criticism, feelings of guilt or inadequacy and a negative self image. 7) Social Isolation and a deep sense of Loneliness - gradually withdraw from social activities, preferring to spend more time alone even though you continue to maintain some social connections. 8) Physical Symptoms including fatigue, headaches and stomach aches, leading to a lack of energy and/or irritability and exhaustion. 9) Emotional Numbness - or a feeling of being disconnected from your own feelings and the world around you. 10) Sleep disturbance - although you may not experience severe insomnia or oversleeping you may notice subtle changes in your sleep patterns, leading to less restorative sleep.
