Once I opened it up, it turned out to be a massive, year-old colony packed with brood and honey. You could see the deep brood coloration showing how long they’d been established. The hive kept going further than expected, so I had to open up more of the roof to get everything out safely. Because it was cold, the bees were clustered tightly underneath, which made them a bit calmer and easier to work with. Perfect conditions for a clean live bee relocation. Round two with Lori. We removed bees from her downstairs wall in June, and now she’s hosting another beautiful hive in her upstairs bathroom. Just when she thought she was going to run out of honey.

It looks like a simple demolition job gone wrong—but the moment that sign gets hit, it triggers a full-scale bee attack. The vibrations alert the hidden hive instantly, causing honeybees to release alarm pheromones and swarm in coordinated defense within seconds. What follows is pure chaos as the worker runs for safety, barely escaping the angry cloud. It’s a wild reminder that in nature, even a small disturbance can unleash a perfectly timed and powerful response.

One wrong move was all it took for the entire hive to react in seconds, as bees switched from calm to full defense mode the moment they sensed danger, releasing alarm pheromones that instantly coordinated a group response to chase away the threat, showing how powerful and organized nature can be when it comes to protection—this wasn’t aggression, it was survival instinct at its peak.

The Sweet Siege The honey badger crashed into the hive like a force that shattered the stillness. In an instant, bees erupted around it—swarming, clinging, their furious buzzing filling the air as it sank its jaws into the heavy honeycomb. Golden honey spilled over its teeth, slow and thick, while wings beat wildly against its fur. It didn’t pull back. With raw determination, the honey badger ripped free another piece, crushing wax and sweetness together. Bees covered its muzzle, its ears, even brushing near its eyes, forming a living storm around its head. Still, it barely reacted—no panic, no retreat. Just steady chewing, relentless and focused, as honey dripped in glistening strands to the ground below. The swarm intensified, a relentless wave of motion and sound. Again and again, they struck—but the honey badger stood firm, paws planted, jaws working with calm defiance. Bite after bite, it claimed the hive, each movement slow but certain. In the chaos of wings and fury, it remained unmoved—unyielding, fearless, and utterly convinced that the feast was its to take.

Shaking a bee swarm onto the ground in front of the hive box is still the most effective way to find the queen.

Sometimes, I even spot her right in the bucket.
It might look rough, but it doesn’t hurt the bees. If they were stressed, they’d release alarm pheromones and sting.

Within seconds, they start fanning Nasanov pheromone to signal “this is home.” That’s why I never use smoke until the queen’s found, as it would mask that communication.
