Oui, oui, in many places 🇫🇷on parle le français (we 🗣speak French)! While it’s common for many French speakers to speak English, it’s considered 😌polite to first address them 🇫🇷en français. Here’s our list of 10 essentials (more resources in our link in bio)! 🇫🇷10 FRENCH PHRASES FOR TRAVEL✨ 1. Bonjour = hello (daytime). In addition to merci (see below), this is the most important word to know. It’s good etiquette to say bonjour when first addressing someone. 2. Bonsoir = good evening (nighttime) 3. Au revoir = good bye/bye 4. Où est […] ? = Where is […] ? This is usually followed by what you’re looking for. For example: Où est le métro ? = Where is the subway? 5. S’il vous plaît = please (formal) 6. Vous parlez anglais ? = Do you speak English? The French word for English is anglais. If you’re wondering if someone speaks English, you can also simply ask, “Anglais ?” 7. Combien… ? = How much…? This is helpful if you’re unsure of an item’s price. 8. L’addition = the check/bill. This is very useful for restaurants! Add “s’il vous plaît” when asking. 9. Les toilettes = the bathroom/toilet 10. Merci ! = thank you! Like bonjour, this is another very important word. If you want to add emphasis, “merci beaucoup” means thank you very much/thanks a lot/many thanks. It’s OK to make mistakes! 🇫🇷 What do you usually answer when someone asks “ça va ?” in French? 👀 If your go-to is always “bien et toi ?” let’s upgrade that a little… French people almost never stick to just one answer, we adapt depending on our mood, the context, and even the person in front of us ✨ Here are some very real options you can start using: • comme un lundi (like a Monday, tired) • pas trop mal (not too bad) • ça peut aller (I’m OK, could be worse) • bof (meh) • nickel (perfect, all good) 👉 “comme un lundi” works any day, you can play with it: “comme un mardi”, “comme un jeudi”… it’s something French people actually say all the time.
