Created by our Museum Educator, Katie Coggins, with help from the Howe’s Sam Milnes and Jared Jenisch, these kits are yours to take home and enjoy! 🎨 While you’re there, browse postcards and stickers from the Hood, and don’t forget to share your finished projects with the Howe at [email protected]. Archivists arrange, describe, preserve - and also pack! Our Accessioning Archivist and Head of Collections Management recently spent a week working with Professor Emerita Ruth-Arlene Howe to survey and pack her papers for transfer to Burns Library. Professor Howe first arrived at BC Law School in 1970 and joined the faculty in 1974, becoming the first Black woman faculty member to achieve tenure and become a full professor. She dedicated much of her career to furthering the best interests of children, often drawing on her experiences as a community activist and social worker. At BC Law, she taught courses in family law, elder, law, legal interviewing, and counseling, and professional responsibility. She also founded the Boston College Third World Journal (renamed the Boston College Journal of Law and Social Justice, which merged with Boston College Law Review in 2017) advised the Black Law Student Association, and cofounded BC's Black Alumni Network. The papers transferred to Burns Library not only document Professor Howe’s extensive work as a BC Law professor but also her work with the BC Black Alumni network, the League of Women Voters, and her activism within Boston’s Black community. The next step in preserving and providing access to Professor Howe’s papers is for our archivists to arrange, describe, and rehouse them. Stay tuned!

Dozens of students at the University of Vermont rallied on Thursday as part of the National Day of Action for Higher Education, where organizers looked to call attention to rising tuition costs, declining public funding, and the need for stronger workplace rights. Supporters gathered on the steps of Howe Library for a rally, led by UVM Staff United and United Academics, joining dozens of other colleges taking action on Thursday. UVM's event is just one of many taking place across the country. From peaceful rallies to educational panels, all are taking place under the same name of “education for all.” Organizers said they hope that the rally will send a clear message to leaders about what’s at stake in higher education.

Unions across the UVM and UVMMC campuses are coming together for a march and rally for fair contracts this Wednesday, May 1st. Faculty (@uvmunitedacademics), grad students (@uvmgsu), and staff are going to gather outside Howe Library at 11:45am and will then march through campus at noon. UVMMC nurses and techs (@vtnurses) and support staff (@uvmmc_supportstaffunited) are meeting outside ACC at noon and will march from there. All five unions are then going to meet up for a rally for fair contracts on the green by the Fleming Museum at 12:15pm. Join our fight for fair contracts at UVM and UVMMC!
