From here to there. Catch a glimpse of campus. UVM’s has four distinct campuses: Redstone, Athletic, Trinity and Central. Central is the university’s hub: made up of academic buildings, libraries, dining halls, markets, student center and some residential halls. Escape to a fairytale library in Vermont’s fabled Northeast Kingdom 🥀 Step back in time and explore a jewel of New England this fall! The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum is a magical gem that has somehow stayed under the radar. This gorgeous library and art gallery are Vermont’s only Athenaeum. If you’re a fan of books and art, you must visit!! 📚 The Athenaeum was founded in 1871 by Horace Fairbanks, whose family launched the iconic scale manufacturing empire. Horace was president of the Fairbanks Company and became Governor of Vermont. He created the first public library in St. Johnsbury as a gift to his community. 🦋 Horace was a huge collector of books and art. He partnered with famed bibliographer William F. Poole to open the library with 8,000+ carefully chosen books. The public library was immediately popular with local families and provided access to books they otherwise would never read. 🎨 Within 2 years, Horace expanded the library with his art collection of over 100 works. He built a massive addition to feature his pride and joy: “The Domes of the Yosemite”, a stunning 15-foot wide painting by Albert Bierstadt. This gallery remains the oldest unaltered art museum in the US. 💫 Over the years, the library has grown to offer 45,000 volumes. In addition to books, the library has audio books, movies, magazines, and a complete set of local newspapers on microfilm, pamphlets, and paperbacks. It’s one of the few libraries in the nation to be designated a prestigious National Historic Landmark. ✨ Come explore this stunning Athenaeum any Mon-Fri (open 10-5) or Sat (10-3). The library is free and the art museum has a suggested donation of $5 (free for town residents and library members). Don’t forget to wear your favorite Belle outfit just in case someone is waiting to waltz!
