Some businesses struggle with employee turnover for years and cannot figure out why. They feel they have tried everything – increasing wages, offering additional benefits, adding in more perks – and yet still the workplace is a revolving door. Gallup published an article recently titled, “42% of Employee Turnover is Preventable but Often Ignored.” Here are 3 ways employers can be more proactive about getting ahead of employee turnover issues: ➡️ Conduct exit interviews – You don’t need to do this with every employee, but when it comes to those staff who were solid performers, consider asking them why they decided to move on and what if any feedback they might have about the workplace, their job function, their reporting structure, their colleagues, etc. ➡️ Check in periodically with your star employees – Are they happy? Do they feel that their contributions are valued? Is there anything they need in order to be even more successful? What are their career goals and how can you support them in getting there? ➡️ Don’t focus only on the positive during the interview process – It can be easy to focus on “selling” candidates on the job, especially if it’s a position you need to fill ASAP. But if there are objectively difficult parts of the job – the candidate will be working with a challenging manager, or the work schedule is demanding, or the work is physically, mentally, or emotionally rigorous, consider being open about that on the front end rather than having blindsided employees quit a few months in.
