If your therapist is throwing you into exposures before helping you reduce compulsions, your symptoms will most likely get worse. 3.Spending time analyzing or reframing your obsessions: If your therapist is diving deep into what your thoughts “mean” or trying to reframe them to make you feel better, that’s actually reassurance in disguise. It can keep you stuck in the OCD cycle instead of helping you break free from it. 4. Exposure hierarchies that aren’t tailored to your core fears: OCD is deeply personal, and your exposures should be too. If you’re being asked to do generic or irrelevant exposures that don’t hit on your real fears, the work may not lead to meaningful change. 5. Not addressing trauma, perfectionism, or other diagnoses that may be fueling symptoms: OCD doesn’t exist in isolation. If your therapist is missing the bigger picture like underlying trauma, perfectionistic tendencies, or other life stressors, it can limit your progress. 7 OCD canon events (that people don’t realize are signs of OCD): 1️⃣ Rereading a text 10+ times before sending it: Not just being careful. OCD can make it feel like one wrong word could mean something bad about you, so you keep checking until it feels “just right.” 2️⃣ Googling the same question over and over: It’s not curiosity. It’s trying to get certainty or relief, but no answer ever feels like enough for long. 3️⃣ Replaying a conversation for hours after: “Why did I say that?” “Did that sound weird?” OCD can keep you stuck analyzing something long after it’s over. 4️⃣ Avoiding certain people, places, or topics: It might look random from the outside, but it’s often about avoiding specific intrusive thoughts or feelings that get triggered. 5️⃣ Mentally “canceling out” a bad thought: Like saying something in your head to undo it, replace it, or make sure it doesn’t mean anything about you. 6️⃣ Needing to feel 100% sure before making a decision: Even small choices can feel overwhelming when OCD demands certainty that just doesn’t exist. 7️⃣ Feeling responsible for things that aren’t actually in your control: Like thinking your thoughts, actions, or lack of action could somehow cause something bad to happen. A lot of these get brushed off as overthinking, being cautious, or just part of your personality. But when it’s OCD, it’s driven by intrusive thoughts and the need to relieve that discomfort.
