Tornado warning in Bloomington, Illinois 👀 In early April 2026, Illinois experienced several tornado events as part of a broader outbreak of severe weather across the Midwestern United States. On April 2, 2026, strong thunderstorms moved across northern Illinois and produced three confirmed tornadoes, all relatively weak (rated EF-0 to EF-1). These tornadoes caused localized damage, including downed trees, minor structural impacts, and disruptions from strong winds and hail. The severe weather continued into the following days. On April 2–3, additional tornadoes were reported in central parts of the state, again mostly weak but indicative of an active storm pattern typical for spring. Deadly tornado and an Illinois hail record An incredible supercell storm spawned at least four tornadoes in our area yesterday, including this one near Kankakee. The tornado continued into Newton County, IN where we are learning that two people were tragically killed. Another person was found dead days later in Aroma Park. (video credit: Matthew Olszewski) The same supercell — and a different storm that moved into Chicago — broke the all-time Illinois hail record twice. The tornadic storm dropped 6.0” diameter hail (DVD-size) in Kankakee, IL, and a 4.8” hailstone (larger than grapefruit) was measured in Darien (southwest suburbs). Both of these hailstones would have broken the previous state record (4.75”), though they are not considered official yet.

Another video from the hailstorm in Illinois a few days ago 😮 Hailstorms in the US: In the United States, hailstorms occur most frequently in the central part of the country. It stretches across parts of the Great Plains and includes states such as Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and South Dakota. These areas experience the highest number of severe hailstorms every year. One reason for the high number of hailstorms in this region is the special combination of weather conditions. Warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico often meets cold, dry air coming from the Rocky Mountains and Canada. This collision creates strong thunderstorms with powerful updrafts that can lift water droplets high into the atmosphere. There the droplets freeze and grow into hailstones before falling to the ground. Among all U.S. states, Texas experiences the most hailstorms overall, with hundreds of events reported each year. Kansas and Nebraska also rank very high in hail frequency. Other states in the central United States, such as Colorado, South Dakota, Oklahoma, and Missouri, regularly experience damaging hail as well.
