infantilization: treating someone like a child when they are not a child. teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are among some of the most commonly infantilized individuals. it seems to come from a place of misunderstanding or discomfort that people will do bizarre things like this. I see it most often when people speak to any other adult but my brother when we are ordering at a restaurant or checking out at a store. people typically avoid speaking directly to him, either because they assume he won’t understand/respond to them, or because they are too uncomfortable to engage with a disabled person. I don’t say this as a judgment, because I’ve felt uncomfortable on occasions when I’ve had opportunities to meet new people with disabilities. and it has taken intentionality at times to make sure I was treating the other person with dignity. I say it as an opportunity for awareness.. have you done this before — talked in a baby voice? pet or stroked an adult with a disability? called a full grown adult “adorable” or “cute” in a tone that you would a kitten or baby? asked a question to someone standing next to a disabled person hoping they would answer on behalf of them? if you wouldn’t talk to or behave a certain way with any adult, it shouldn’t change just because the adult has a disability 👏🏼 - - - - - #downsyndrome #worlddownsyndromeday #infantilization #disability #inclusion #bekind #morealikethandifferent #dignity #t21 #downsyndromeawareness #nothingdownaboutit

We are not exempt from internalized ableism friends, and the idea that other autistic people with higher support needs are “childish” is ableist and wrong !
