You basically have 2 years to get your app ready & learn all of internal medicine 😭 Jk jk but I really can’t believe this is coming up somewhat soon😵 I feel like I just became a senior resident and now we’re 7+ months through this year! A lot of people will work as a hospitalist, do a chief year before applying to fellowship especially if have interests of working in GME/academic medicine in the future, or they’re still deciding if they want to do fellowship. Everyone is different! And many people do outpatient IM or are hospitalists as their career too, of course! One of the things that I love about internal medicine is that there are so many paths within it and you can pivot and switch your practice setting/subspecialty with a little bit of planning😊 I still feel like I learn something new about internal medicine everyday, there’s just literally so much to know. Feel like everyday in residency I’m constantly doing my best to learn and be present today but also plan for the future 🫠 if you’re an IM resident, lmk if you feel the same way!! #internalmedicineresidency #residency #balanceinmedicine

When I finished my three years of residency training, my plan was clear: pursue a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology. My strategy was simple. I would work as a nocturnist for two years, then apply for fellowship. But life and medicine does not always follow the plans we make. Although that path did not unfold the way I expected, one thing never left me: a deep curiosity about the full scope of General Internal Medicine. I wanted to understand the whole patient, not just one organ system. In 2019, after recertifying in Internal Medicine, I had a moment of clarity. If the next decade of my career was going to be meaningful, I needed to intentionally change the trajectory of my personal and professional development. So I started searching. I attended medical and non-medical conferences. I looked for mentors and coaches. I explored new ideas about health, leadership, and systems. Along the way, something clicked. Today I know my work sits at the intersection of circadian and metabolic health,human resilience — with a special focus on the physiology and lived experience of the night-shift lifestyle. That is where my curiosity lives. That is where my voice and vision belongs. This is my final answer. And one more thing: Primary care is not dead.
