Field Note – Northern Meadow Verge, Early Spring I spotted it while kneeling to photograph a cluster of forget-me-nots — a smooth, sky-blue beetle no larger than a thumbnail, clinging to the topmost blooms. Its shell had a matte sheen, almost like ceramic, weathered and gently speckled. At first, I assumed it was feeding. Then it shifted, and everything changed. The shell split with no warning and from within, petal-like structures began to unfurl in a slow, upward spiral. They were a cool blue at the base but darkened into violet at the tips, each one etched with thin black filaments like stylized veins. What looked like antennae became stamens. What had seemed like a back was now a bloom. The effect was theatrical — a sudden, almost impossible transformation from insect to flower, as though the two forms were layered in the same body, waiting for a cue. It didn’t resemble camouflage. This felt like display. I still don’t know what triggered it — temperature? sunlight? touch? But it stayed open just long enough for me to capture a few photos, the filaments trembling slightly in the breeze. And then, with a deliberate folding motion, it sealed itself shut again, vanishing into blue carapace. I’ve marked the location on the map — if this species repeats this behavior regularly, I need to come back. . As you guys know from my last video, yesterday we found a HARLEQUIN BEETLE!!! Acrocinus longimanus. It is one of my favorite insects of all time, that I have wanted to see forever. But the harlequin beetle came with a surprise: hiding under its elytra were many pseudoscorpions! They are sometimes phoretic, aka neutral relationship, and sometimes symbiotic. This may actually be a symbiotic relationship here, because large Cerambycids often have mites on them, so the pseudoscorps will live on them and eat off their parasites. The largest stag beetle in Australia and one of the most colorful out of the entire Lucanidae family, Phalacrognathus muelleri is one stunning insect. Not only does it possess the giant set of mandibles, but its exoskeleton is remarkably iridescent. A number of morphs exist, where the beetles may display a wide range of colors. They are prominent in the forests across Queensland and New Guinea where they lay eggs in decaying wood. Larvae are important components in the ecosystem as they work together with fungi to break down logs throughout. When they emerge, the adults will feed on sweets such as nectar, sap and fruits.
