Bulb planting has officially begun here! Starting with Iris reticulata and Ornithogalum ‘White Trophy’ because I find smaller bulbs can dry out if you hold on to them for too long before planting, particularly iris. Planting these in what I suppose is a sort of mini, in situ bulb lasagna with the later Ornithogalum beneath and iris above (2 times their own depth from the surface). I should say clearly that this combo is an experiment but hoping it will do well. Both need good drainage. Iris need full sun and Ornithogalum like half a day of shade. In reality this spot gets almost full sun, a quarter day of shade… so we’ll see how they do. I’m planning to layer up my bulb planting like this all over the garden and hoping this will mean I can cram in hundreds of bulbs without planting individually. Iris reticulata is a bulb type iris that pops out from the ground in late winter/early spring along the early blooming crocuses. This petite iris species is easy to grow in a well drained sunny spot, that stays relatively dry in summer. Netted iris is available from bulb suppliers and is usually planted in fall for the spring flower show. The flowers come in shades of white, blue, and violet. Iris reticulata goes dormant by summer, so it can be layered with late spring emerging perennials. #iris #winterflowers #bulbs #dwarfplants

Day 5: I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a flower more beautiful in my life. I could stare at her all day. This Tall Bearded Iris is so enchanting that it’s almost hypnotic. As if the lavender ruffles weren’t enough, nature had to go and add in a gold lining… are you kidding me? How does this even exist in reality? 🤩😍I just about had a heart attack when I saw her bloom! She is called “Effective” and I got her rhizome from Schreiners.
