As I’m considering which form of contraception during my post-partum stay, I wanted to touch on a common side effect of a birth control that I see frequently in practice as a dermatologist. Hormonal IUDs such as Mirena, Liletta, and Skyla contain progestin, which alone (without estrogen) can affect sebaceous glands and cause the body to produce too much oil. This may lead to acne breakouts. Will all hormonal IUDs cause acne? 👉Not necessarily. However, if you’ve never had acne before and suddenly develop painful, cystic lesions around your jawline, chin or neck, your IUD may be to blame. The good news is that copper IUDs do not contain any type of hormone and shouldn’t cause #hormonalacne while many oral contraceptive pills are actually FDA-approved to *treat* acne! IUDs are considered one of the most effective forms of birth control, so talk to your OB or Derm if you have any concerns about side effects (which are actually not as common as you think). Some patients are getting IUDs inside vehicles that look like RVs or food trucks instead of at a doctor’s office. The mobile clinics are part of a small but growing number of programs aimed at increasing rural access to women’s health services, including log-acting reversible contraception. Rural areas have disproportionately fewer doctors than urban ones. And rural doctors may not offer all forms of birth control. I see DOCTORS and NPs all over social media, using the word progestin and progesterone interchangeably. They are NOT the same!!! Progestins - synthetic. Progesterone- bioidentical. But we have a ton of doctors who have been prescribing one in four women with oral birth control and IUDs and they refuse to talk about how significantly different these two are! So you as the consumer need to educate yourself. It’s almost like birth control is the sacred cow you’re not allowed to talk about. But if we’re gonna start talking to women about how safe bioidentical hormones are you better start educating them on how unsafe synthetic hormones can be.
