For those wondering, this is the SIMPLE way to hem jeans. There are more advanced techniques that tailors use, but this is good enough for me! If you’re interested in learning how to hem your own pants, I’ll be coming out with new dates for my beginner sewing classes soon. Classes are in person and very beginner friendly. You do need to have your own sewing machine for the classes.

Stretch or no stretch… does it really matter? 👀⁠ ⁠ Oh yes it does. And this is where sewing gets interesting ✂️✨⁠ ⁠ We’ve had these gorgeous denim blue corduroy fabrics in our core collection for a while now, and I still get lots of questions about what patterns to pair them with. The chunkier cord has that lovely bit of stretch, while the finer needlecord is all about structure and shape.⁠ ⁠ Let’s keep it simple:⁠ ⁠ 👖 The @megannielsenpatterns Ash Jeans are designed for stretch fabric. That means the finished jeans are actually drafted a little smaller than your body because the fabric stretches to fit you.⁠ ⁠ 👖 The Dawn Jeans are designed for non-stretch fabric. They’re drafted with very little ease, so what you make is much closer to your actual body measurements.⁠ ⁠ If a pattern is designed for stretch, I really recommend sticking with stretch. A clean jean hem slit isn’t about cutting the side seam — it’s about finishing it with structure and control. If you’re a beginner sewist, here’s how to sew a denim hem slit the right way: 👖 1. Reinforce before you cut. Sew a horizontal bar tack or short straight stitch at the top of the slit to prevent splitting. 📏 2. Press the seam allowances open first. Denim is bulky. Pressing reduces thickness and helps the slit lay flat. 🧵 3. Fold and topstitch evenly. Turn each side under neatly and topstitch close to the edge for that clean, ready-to-wear finish. ✂️ 4. Use a longer stitch length (3.0–3.5). Denim topstitching needs space to sit beautifully on thick fabric. 🚫 Common beginner mistake: Cutting the slit without reinforcing the top — this causes tearing and weakens the seam over time. A well-finished hem slit adds movement and elevates basic jeans instantly. Clean finishing is what separates practice from polish. This is the part where we build real garment construction skills. Machine darning jeans — step by step 🧵 Always start by reinforcing the damaged area from the inside with fusible interfacing and a piece of fabric. I baste the fabric in place first, so nothing moves while sewing. If the hole is close to a pocket, remove the pocket before repairing — and sew it back on afterwards. Don’t have thick denim thread?
