Some sewing tricks are so simple they almost feel like cheating… but they make your projects look so much better. Here are a few sewing ‘cheat codes’ I wish I knew earlier: 🧻 Use tissue paper under slippery fabric – it stops the machine from eating delicate fabrics like chiffon and keeps the process rip-free. 🧵 Always test stitches on a scrap first – same fabric, same layers. It saves so much frustration later (don’t ask me how I know) ✂️ Trim seam allowances before turning corners – it removes bulk and makes everything look crisp. 🥢 Use a chopstick or knitting needle to push out corners – neat edges without risking holes. I keep a pair of chopsticks nearby at all times! 🧼 Mark fabric with a tiny bit of bar soap – it washes out and works surprisingly well. Go for white soap over transparent to mark on dark fabrics. 📎 Use binder clips for thick fabrics – denim and canvas behave much better with clips than pins and you won’t accidentally poke yourself which is a bonus. 🧹 Use blue tac to keep lint out of your machine – a quick clean keeps stitches running smoothly and with blue tac it’ll super easy to collect dust. 🪡 Reinforce high-stress areas – pockets, inner seams, and belt loops last much longer with a few extra stitches. Is it low effort sewing if it still looks this good? Instead of spending time pinning and measuring before hemming a garment I sometimes just overlock the fabric and fold twice before sewing. (You can also do a single straight stitch if you’re worried about bulk). The edge of the overlocked fabric mixed with some slight tension whilst folding allows you to hem evenly and straight without measuring. Perfect for medium to heavy weight fabrics and fabrics with no stretch. There are still some learning curves to this lazy girl technique- this typically works best on straight edges and you should make sure you’re only holding tension when you fold and not when you sew. #teaganjacobs
