I run a small Eheim pickup60 internal filter as well as an OF ultra slim HOB, mainly for its skimmer function, on this 4ft tank. As they say, the best filter is the one you actually bother to clean! This tank has quite a lot of emersed plants that do a great job at absorbing ammonia and nitrates, along with the floating plants. I mainly just do top offs with 25% changes maybe once a month. Fancy equipment can be useful, but it isn’t necessary to create a healthy, balanced ecosystem. How do my tanks not have any algae? Simple, plecos! These guys are amazing for keeping algae under control - they'll clean glass, decorations, and driftwood all day. But here's the catch 👉🏻 while they do eat algae, they also produce a TON of waste, which means your filter has to keep up. 💩 A lot of new fishkeepers don't realize that plecos don't stay small forever... many common species grow over a foot long 😳 and need a big tank to stay healthy. And here's the most important part: plecos can actually STARVE if you only rely on algae in your tank. Once they've cleaned it all up, they need extra food like algae wafers, blanched veggies (zucchini, cucumber, peas 🥒🥬), and even driftwood to chew on for fiber.
