Part 1: How to approach an engagement ring in a more sustainable way. Natural vs. lab grown diamonds, which one is most aligned with your shopping goals and budget? In summary: • Neither are wholly good or bad, be wary of claims that sway too far either way. There are better examples of each, for example, depending on how a mine manages its environmental impact and how the lab grown manufactures source its energy to power its production. • Lab grown may be chemically the same as natural but doesn’t hold the same value, essentially it’s limitless, so it is similar to producing a fashion product. • Engagement rings usually hold value outside of its materiality (emotional/symbolic), however it is also a substantial financial investment. Therefore, the above should be considered, even if there’s no intention to ever sell it on, the retail cost has an astronomical mark up. An uncut lab grown diamond of 1 carat is about $25 at current market cost. • natural diamonds have a very complex and murky supply chain, even though the Kimberley Process has been effective in eliminating blood diamonds in rough diamond circulation, people have concerns about what’s already out there. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is the process established in 2003 "to ensure that diamond purchases were not financing violence by rebel movements and their allies seeking to undermine legitimate governments." (Link to article in bio). The KP is a stone by stone or parcel by parcel certification system. According to Brad Brooks-Rubin, the system was once strong but recently has been proven ineffective. There have been conflict diamonds coming from the Central African Republic in the last 8 years and that has not been stopped. KP also allows for "Mixed Origin" stones. For example, Dubai mixes diamonds received from Zimbabwe and South Africa in a parcel and writes on the certificate "Mixed Origin" before sending it to another country to be cut. Conflict diamonds can end up on the market this way, unless someone is checking every single diamond in that parcel. Clearly reforms in the KP are needed, but the latest KP meeting showed that several countries are reluctant to issue any reform and do not want to be part of the KP anymore. We're not sure whether reforms for the KP process will take place and are continuing to update ourselves with its current issues. So far we have been using Harmony Canadian Origin Diamonds sourced from Hoover&Strong, which are mined to the highest environmental standards in the world.
