Here are 6 key considerations: Layered Lighting Approach – Use a combination of ambient (general), task (focused), and accent (decorative) lighting to create a well-balanced and functional space. For example, recessed lights for overall illumination, pendant lights over an island for task lighting, and under-cabinet lights for accent and utility. Proper Height and Placement – Hang pendant lights 30–36 inches above a kitchen island or dining table for optimal illumination and visual balance. Recessed lights should be spaced about 4–6 feet apart, while under-cabinet lighting should be positioned toward the front of the cabinet to reduce shadows. Size and Scale – Ensure light fixtures are proportionate to the space. For example, oversized pendants can overwhelm a small kitchen, while fixtures that are too small may not provide sufficient illumination. A good rule for pendant lighting width over an island is to add the width of the island in inches and divide by three for ideal pendant size. Your kitchen pendant lights might actually be the wrong size — and most people don’t realise it until the kitchen feels slightly “off”. If your pendants look tiny, overcrowded or awkwardly low, it’s usually not the light… it’s the proportions. Here are the basic rules interior designers follow for kitchen island lighting: • Pendant size: Around 1/3 of your island width Example: 90cm island → pendants about 25–30cm wide • Spacing: If using multiple pendants, their total visual width should cover 60–75% of the island length, not the whole island. • Distance between pendants: About 60–75cm centre-to-centre to avoid a cluttered look. • Height: Hang pendants 75–90cm above the countertop. • Ceiling height tip: For ceilings 2.7m+, order at least 150cm adjustable cable so installers can adjust the drop. And one of the biggest mistakes I see: If your island is over 2.4m long, skip three tiny pendants and use two larger statement lights instead. Well, every kitchen requires a unique lighting design, but here are a few things I may do and some I’d definitely do ⬇️ - I always light those benches and not the floors – because unless you’re chopping the veggies down there, well, you just don’t need to light them! - Add indirect light to soften hard edges, create a sense of space, and reduce shadowing on the work surfaces. - Maybe Integrate light into overhead cupboards or a stand-alone pantry. - Showcase the beautiful materials chosen for the kitchen. - Choose warm white light - as we prioritise visual comfort and functionality in all our kitchen designs. - I select quality light fittings with a focus on sustainability, efficiency, performance and of course, beautiful light. ✨️ Cozy kitchen lighting ✨️ I am finally at the lighting stage of this kitchen project and boy are these fixtures gorgeous. They are a nod to the vintage cozy cottage charm I am going for. Funny - not funny - story. The large glass fixture had to be returned and exchanged because the original nearly caught fire. After dbl and triple checking the wiring, the smell of burning was not going away! Kitchen lighting - 100% the most important lighting in the home and I went DEEP into this one! As promised here are some details: In a space where you need it to be well lit, or cosy and intimate it really needs more than a builder grade downlight grid and instead, lots of layers. So what I landed on… Circuit 1 - surface mounted ceiling spotlights from @corstonarchitecturaldetail, these are angled onto the island for task lighting and onto some key cabinets. Circuit 2 - wall lights, and led lighting. Here I wanted to focus on the details, illuminate the corners and add draw the eye up. Circuit 3 - the island pendant lights from @jimlawrencemade. We hung these low to really make the island feel cosy at night. Circuit 4 - the dining table pendant light from @lighting_direct. …oh and they are all on dimmers.
