Knuckling is something I get asked about a lot… And it’s one of those things that can look small — but actually tells us a lot. When I place Archie’s paw in a knuckled position, he corrects it straight away. That’s what we want to see. With Alfie, it’s different. He doesn’t always correct his paw — and that’s because of the neurological impact from IVDD. It’s not about strength. It’s about communication between the brain and the body. Emergency vet run tonight for our sweet @lukecatwalker. Around 9:45pm, we noticed his right front paw was folding under—he was walking on the top of it instead of the pad. It’s called knuckling, and it often points to a neurological issue. Earlier this week, he was hopping on three legs, holding up his rear right one. MedVet in Manassas suspected a spinal disc issue and sent us home with pain meds (buprenorphine) and a steroid (prednisolone, to reduce spinal inflammation). He started doing better… but yesterday we saw signs of trouble again. Tonight, he’s visibly uncomfortable, meowing, and can’t seem to settle—even on opioid pain medication. So we’re headed to the Regional Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield—about a 45-minute drive—for emergency care.
